SOCIAL SECURITY In observance of the first na tional Senior Citizens Month dur ing May, Miss Martha Pressly, Greenwood social security dis trict manager, displayed a re newed effort on behalf of her of fice staff to maintain a high level of service to the public generally and to the aged residents of Lau rens County in particular. Miss Pressly pointed out that President Kennedy’s proclama tion, designating May as Senior Citizens Month, urges all persons “to cooperate in its observance by increasing community aware ness of the problems faced by older men and women, stnngtb- ening services and opportunities to meet their special needs, giv ing recognition to their past and present contributions, and mak ing this special month the begin ning of continuing interest and activity on their behalf.” Miss Pressly cited the latest benefit statistics for this area as evidence of the contribution sen ior citizens make toward eco nomic stability in the commun ity. She said more than 2,406 t Laurens County men and women receive social security monthly benefits which total more than $1,747,788 each year. “Studies show,’ she added, “that the sen ior citizen spends the biggest part of Ms social security check in the community for food, cloth ing, and housing. And the num ber of people receiving benefits is constantly increasing as more and more people Join the senior citizens ranks each year.” Mias Pressley invited all work ers over 88 who are still working to visit the social security office for a complete explanation of the provisions of the social se- - curity law as it applies in the in dividual’s particular c i r c u m - f stances.
