M. Leaman. Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Roberts spent a recent weekend with their son and family at Spartanburg. Their grandchildren Patsy and Bill Roberts returned home with them and spent last week. Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Pinson visited Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Abrams at Bennetts ville several days recently. Friends of Miss Agnes Leaman are glad she is at home again after being a patient at Bailey Memorial Hospital days X the* past weekend with Mrs. H. For those who would like to catch a glimpse of tomorrow alongside yesteryear, a visit on this Palmetto Pathway is a must. Parr Shoals for years has been a power-producing section in South Carolina. Today it is more than ever a center of electrical generating activity. And there’s more than a meager amount of interest in the functions of the new Nuclear Reactor Plant lo cated at Parr. The Broad River has figured in the generating of electricity at Parr since the early days of elec tric power. There are three plants located there now. The first was on the dam site where water was used to push dynamos which produced electricity. The second was the steam-driven plant a few yards north of the original plant. / Now, a few yards east of the two other plants is the Nuclear Reactor. On an approach to Parr along Highway SIS west of Jenkinsville, one will suddenly come upon *a round ball protruding from the ground. First visible and tower ing above, are large stacks from the steam plant. There is more to the history of this area than power, al though practically everything at Parr has centered around the operation of the power plants for years. The little village of Parr is situated on a high knoll overlook ing the river and the wide ex panse created by the lower dam. a house party at Ocean Drive during weekend. For years, people who lived in the two areas only saw each other across the river and communicated by shouting mes sages from bank to bank. The only connecting link was the railroad trestle which spanned the chasm south of the dam With modern highway con struction, a few months ago Peak and Parr w^te first con nected by a bridge. The Pinner Memorial Bridge was named af ter a physician who served the two communities for many years. The story is that he main tained transportation on both sides of the river and walked across the railroad trestle to serve his patients. There is more activity today on the part of the residents of Peak, while at Parr things are rather quiet except in hte vicinity of construction of the nuclear re actor plant. But, to you who love to travel to out-of-the-way places and see the unusual, we suggest you fol low this Palmetto Pathway to Peak and Parr. Mrs. C. A. Wright and ten members of the Shady Grove 4-H club and Mr. James Johnson at tended the final meeting of Elec tric Club in Laurens, on Tues day night. A number of Shady Grove 4-H members gave demon strations at this meeting. Miss Myrtice Taylor, and Mrs. Judy Glover of the Laureqs County Home Demonstration agent and assistant agent visited in the community last Friday in inter est of the wQrk with ladies of Home Demonstration and 4-H work. Judy Davenport was among the 4-H club members re ceiving chickens for her project. These were delivered last week. Mrs. Maggie Marshall was honored by her children on Sun day. Mrs. Marshall’s children gathered at the home of their mother on Easter Sunday to hon or her. Todd over the wekeend. Attend a church in your com munity on Sunday! Cox Promoted To Sgt. At The Citadel Cadet Joel R. Cox, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joel R. Cox, 307 West Pitts St., Clinton, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant with nithe corps pf cadets at Ths Citadel, Charleston. Cadet Cox, a Junior at the mil itary college, is majoring in pre- medicine and is enrolled In the Advanced Army ROTC program. He is a member of the pre-medi cal society and the block “C” iclub, and was a member of last year’s varsity track'team. The Clinton cadet is one of sev. eral promoted under a new pro gram to permit members of the junior class to serve in positions of greater responsibility. Previ ously corporal was the highest rank that could be held by a junior. The new system will per mit cadets who are likely to achieve officer status during their senior years to have addi tional opportunities to exercise leadership during their punior years.
