O’DELL Work Unit Conservationist R. L. Guinn has completed a job of “Woodland Weeding” on 42 acres of farm woodland on his place seven miles west of Lau rens on Dirty Creek. This work was curried out as a part of the complete soil and water conser vation plan on his farm. Scrub hardwoods were poisoned with a tree injector to release or give more space for the better trees to grow?. Loblolly pine seedlings were planted in the opening left by the removal of the trees. The Laurens Soil Conservation Dis trict’s hardwood control and tree planting services helped Mr. Guinn carry out these practices which were cost shared through the local Agricultural Conserva tion Program. • • • Trees are now being planted in the Duncan Creek Watershed for erosion control. Some of the farmers who will have trees planted on eroded silt produc ing areas this year are: Huey Bonds, D. D. Copeland, T. H Copeland, J. O. Haupfear, T. S. Abbott, Rt. 3, Laurens,;the meeting, have recently completed live stock watering ponds on their farms. These are the first ponds to be constructed in the county under the 1963 program year. This makes the fifth farm pond to be built by Ott on his beef cattle farm seven miles south of Laurens, and the second pond for Abbott on his farm in the Trinity Ridge sec tion. Both farmers will receive ACP cost-sharing payments to help pay the cost of construc tion. Other farmers who have plans for building livestock wa tering ponds are Claude Law- son, Horace and James Martin, Perry Moore and Alex Simpson. Coastal Bermuda planting is now getting underway in Lau rens County. Bill Benner has already notified the Laurens Soil Conservation District that he has his land ready for plant ing. Dial Gray has reported that his land will be prepared by mid-week. The Laurens District will of fer the complete planting ser vice to farmers again this year. Twelvte other farmers represent ing a total of 140 acres' have requested the district to help them in planting coastal ber- muda grass this season. Grass Soil investigations ^ for two flood retarding dams in the Duncan Creek watershed are scheduled for the first week in April. These - dams are desig nated as Number 7 and 8 in the Watershed Work Plain and are located on the Whitten Village farm. The two dams along with the stream channel improve ment work below them consti tute Construction Unit Number One, with work scheduled to start during the summer. Bor ings will be made to determine the water holding ability of th£ soil and also the best areas borrow the soil for the construc tion of the dams. A truck- mounted power auger will be used to make the necessary borings. Success in a career .. . happy marriage ... children ... a beautiful home ... a fair share of worldly goods . . . health . . . happiness? I suppose I wish all of these things for Pam, in some measure. Bnt if I had to limit myself to a single wish—I would ask for her a deep and abiding faith. How wonderful it is to have an nn- shaken belief in God’s way and His works, ph— the conviction of His love for us. Some of us may be limited in our ability to give our children material things, but we need never stint on teaching them spiritual values.
