I am a self-employed farmer and have been paying social security since 1886 ANSWER: It is not absolutely necessary for you to check your social security account — any more than it is to check your bank account. However, it is a very good idea to check both your bank account and your so cial security account. If there is an error in your bank account you will lose money. If there Is an error in your social security account you may lose benefits. This loss could result in getting a smaller benefit or losing your right to any benefits.
