Mr. and Mrs. V. L. Gaines, for
merly of Landrum, have moved
into a home in the Lakewood
section. Mr. Gaines is connected
with the Laurens Hosiery Mills.
Their daughter, Melinda, is a
freshman at Presbyterian Col
lege. and their son, Douglas, is
a sophomore at Clemson.
Friends here of G. F. Cooley of
Camden, will regret to know he is
ill and a patient at the Providence
hospital, Columbia. Mrs. Cooley
is the former Miss Leila Adair of
Clinton.

James P. Sloan, Jr., has en
rolled at Harvard University,
Cambridge, Mass., for his fresh
man year. He was accompanied
to Cambridge on Tuesday by his
father and uncle, John Sloan of
Greenville. Enroute they spent
several days during the week-end
in New York City.
Cecil Davenport has returned to
Clemson College to begin his sen
ior year. He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs Joe Davenport.

Laurens — Linda Wrenn, 16-
year-old daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. J. W. Wrenn of Rt. 1, Wat
erloo, was named “Miss Laur
ens Electric Co-op,’’ at the an
nual Electric Fair here Friday
night.
Miss Wrenn, a senior at Hic
kory Tavern High School, was
crowned by last year's winner,
Diane Price of Joanna. Miss
Wrenn will compete in the state
contest to be held in Columbia in
December.
Jeanrve Holbrook, 16, of Simp-
sonville. was second-place win
ner in the beauty contest and
Miss Betty Henderson, 16, of
Waterloo, was third.
In the talent contest Alice Sul
livan. 12-year-old daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. J. B Sullivan,
Jr., placed first with a vocal se
lection, “Where The Boys Are.”
Audrey Martin was runnerup
and she also sang. Perry Simp
son, of Clarks Hill, second run
ner-up with a ventriloquist act.
The Electric Fair was held un
der a large tent on the Laurens
Fair Grounds. Also furnishing
entertainment were the Laurens
Barber Shop Singers and several
professional groups

Pvt. Walter William Rowland,
Com. B, 4th Battalion, 1st Train
ing Battalion, Fort Jackson, was
recently selected a regimental
Commander’s Orderly.
Selection was made during an
inspection of the regimental
guard when he was
the neatest, most alert
informed soldier of the Guard
composed of some thirty men.
This Is one of the highest awards
a trainee can attain during basic
training.

John H. West Passes
In Alexandria, La.
Funeral services were held Sun
day in Alexandria, La., for John
H. West. 86. a former Clinton resi
dent.
Mr. West is survived by a lau
ghter, Mrs. Evelyn Hixson of
Alexandria, and two grandsons,
Dr. Walter G. Coker of Spartan
burg. and John W. Coker of Char
lotte, N. C., both formerly of this
city.
Mr. West died in an Alexandria
hospital on Saturday.
