Africa He probably knows the African situ- at ton better than any other leading statesman The Katanga province is now a sourer of abundant cheap copper Doubtless the handling of labor is rath er ruthless, and the district is handicapped by its dis tance from the sea and transportation costs There arc- two stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange which will be directly affected by what happens in Katanga. These are “Roan Antelope Mines’’ and the Rhodesian Selection Trust-" Before the Congo revo lution. these were selling at 44 and 2 l 4. respectively. They have since fallen to around 3 and 14, respec tively Whoever ultimately controls the Congo these mines must be kept operating. It seems absolutely impossible lor the natives to carry on these great copper developments To close them down would be suicidal to the Congo. This means that either the Bel gians must change and take a more constructive at titude, or else these mines will be operated by the Russians or by some appointee of the United Nations.
