It's true the chemical will work on bitter weeds late in the season, but for the sake of cotton, gardens, etc., it is best to apply it now. f Horace Martin of Youngs, and i Lucius Burns of Mountville, have | applied 2.4 D to corn just after 'planting it. and. brother, it works. It kills grass and weeds. Mr. Burns tried it last year with very good results. Hugh Buford of Jonna, tells I me he is planting l.so acres of com this year. An application of 2,4-D would save cultivation right when he is needed in the cotton and grain fields There again it must be put on’ before cotton comes up. Hugh is using pre-emerge chemical weed control in his cotton, and says that he has been doing this for the past eight years. This past week I visited Bill How ard Ladd, and William and Pol ly Adair, all 4-H club members. Each member purchased a calf this past spring and are doing a fine job growing out their calves. I plan to visit each boy and girl wbo pur chased calves this spiring in the next week or so. We have received reports that black leg has killed a number of calves this spring. We highly rec ommend that farmers have their cattle vaccinated. This disease is easily controlled, but is deadly once a calf has it. So be sure that the calves are treated before it’s too late. The Thornwell Orphanage campus is a solid mass of beauty. The azaleas are in full bloom. Dr. Mac donald has done an outstanding job of keeping the campus beautiful If you want to see beauty just go by. Conservation Notes By J. B. O’DELL, Conservationist Over 150 acres of Coastal Bermu da were planted last w'eek on six farms of the county. The rain last Thursday night hit It just right. These farmers should get a good stand of grass. About half of this acreage was planted by a contract planter who furnishes the grass roots, planter, equipment and labor vfor the complete job of planting. Most of the remaining acreage was planted by the Laurens Soil Conser vation District's Bermuda planter and tree planter. There is still time to plant Bermuda this year, provid ed you have plenty of moisture in | the ground. Farmers interested in j the use of the district's Bermuda planter can get information on it at the Soil Conservation office in the post office building in Laurens. * * * The following district cooperators were assisted by the technicians of the Soil Conservation Service in the ! surveying and construction of ter- |races on their farms last week: W. R. McCuen. Jr.. Bennie B. Blakely, | J. L Epting and Capers W. Knight. I The terraces were bull; by the dis trict's terracing machine. This was the first terracing work of the year to be done by this equipment due to so much bad weather and w’et ground. This payment ts 90 cents per 100 linear feet of terrace construct ed The total cost is $1.20 per 100 feet or the cost-sharing payment is 75 per cent of the total cost. If you plan to have terracing work done on your farm, it will be well for you to consider the ACP cost-shar ing help available for this practice. • * • Have you fertilized your fish pond yet? The best time to start was several weeks ago, but it's not too late now. j A. P. Stockman, who operates a 700-<j.cre beef cattle farm near Wa terloo, was fertilizing bis pond the other day. He said. *1 inter.d to do a better job of fertilizing my pond this year than I did last year." Weekly applications should be made until the water becomes so dark a white object can't bee seen 12 to 14 inches under the water. When the water begins to clear up thereafter an additional application of fertilizer should be made. A fertilized pond will support 400 to 500 pounds of fish per acre as compared to 100 to ISO pounds for an unfertilized pond. Your Social Security Inquire before you retire. This is sound advice to the individual plan- nnig to file for old age and survivors insurance payments. Knowing what papers are needed in advance will speed up your claim. You should always have your so cial security card. Evidence of earn ings or self-employment income for 1959 are required in most cases. Any documents showing your age are i helpful. A widow with minor chil dren will need her marriage certifi- ca'e and the childrens’ birth cer tificates. - If you work for wages, your W-2, withholding tax statement for 1959 will be* aceptable as evidence of earnings. If you are in business for i yourself, an extra copy of your 1040, income tax return, and Schedule i 1040 C, profit and loss statement from your business, are nedeed along with your cancelled check showing payment of the tax. If you are a farm operater, you will need a copy of Schedule 1040 C. These items are necessary in meal cases. Needed papers vary with the individual.
