At home after 3:35 Woman Dies In Jail At Laurens Laurens—A 36-year-old Columbia woman was found dead in the Lau rens. County jail early Saturday morning. County Jailer Tom Williams said that Mrs. Mary Ester Clayton was dead when he entered her cell at 7:15 a. m. with her breakfast. Sheriff C. W. Wier said the wom an was arrested by deputies Friday at 1:10 a. m. and jailed on a charge of drunkenness. An autopsy was ordered perform ed at Greenville General hospital A report is expected by Monday, the sheriff said She was the only prisoner in the woman's section of the jail, accord ing to the jailer. Mr. Williams said she refused her supper Friday night, but drank a soft drink which she requested. The jailer said he heard noises in the woman's section of the jail about 10:30 p. m., went to investi gate and found the woman on the floor He said that two maids put her to bed and that he later checked the cell and talked with the woman. A * month ago, the company switched from its privately operated Sav-A-Staonp plan to Gold Bond stamps in Tennessee, Alabama, Florida and all of Georgia with the exception of Augusta and Savannah. Bozard Is Dean At j*— Appalachian State Dr. John F. Bozard, since 1957 a member of the faculty at Appalach ian State Teachers College, im» been named as the college's first Dean of Instruction. He took over Ais duties on March 1. He will continue to devote a co 1 ' stoerablc portion of his time to the teaching of English, as he has been doing. IJe is a professor in the De partment of English. Dr. Bozard holds the bachelor of arts degree from Furman Univer sky, the master of arts degree from the Univesity of Virginia, and the doctor of philosophy degree from Cornell University. A native of Orangeburg, Dr. Bo zard once served as principal of Clinton High School and headed the Cross Hill school for one year. He was professor of English and as sistant dean at Furman University. Greenville, from 1929 to 1939, and was dean and head of the English , department at Limestone College from 1939 to 1948. His wife is the former Mass Elise Henry, daughter of H. D. Henry and the late Mirs. Henry of Clinton. I News From The County Agent M. la OUTZ, County Agent The Spartanburg Feeder Cattle sale will be held April 1, and the Greenwood sale will be held on April 14. There should be around 500 head of cattle in each of these sales. Most of the cattle will weigh between 400 and 600 pounds. Anyone interested in picking up good feed ers will find them at either sale. A group of 4-H members from Lauprens County have been invited to tour the $p>aitan Grain and Milling Company plant and farm on Friday, March 25. The group will receive free lunch. They will leave the agricultural building at 8:15 a. m. and return at about 4:00 p. m. Thorn well Orphanage will fur nish transporta lino. H. L. Eason and R.. L. Wickham, along with Miss Peggy Berly, will accompany the group. Those interested in going should contact the county agent’s office.
