Joel E. Cannonr^Mrs. Cannon and children, the Woman’s Society of Christian Service of Broad Street Methodist Church entertained with an informal reception on Tuesday evening at Hodges Hall. Receiving with the Cannons were J. B. Arnold, chairman of the board of stewards, Mrs. Arnold. Mrs. Paul M. Muller, president of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service, and Mr. Muller. Punch, decorated cake squares and salted nuts were served from the refreshment table beautifully ' appointed with pink gladioli and asters flanked by white tapers in silver holders. Mrs. H. J, Pitts, Mrs. Howard Smith, Mrs. Davis V. Pitts served punch and also assist ing were Mrs. James L. Walker and Mrs Arnold M. Cannon. Arrangements of Gladioli in white and pink and bright colored zinnias decorated the reception hall. Club Meets Thursday With Mrs. Pitts At a meeting of her bridge club on Thuraday afternoon Mrs. Hen derson Pitts served a dessert course at two prettily appointed tables. Later the progressions were en joyed with Mrs. Wilmot Shcaly making top score. Dahlias, gladioli, and rosies were arranged in the card rooms for the meeting Mr. and Mrs. Loftis Entertain For Sisters Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Loftis enter tained on Monday and Tuesday for W. S. McCurry of Arden, N. C.; four sisters of Mrs. Loftis, Mrs. Mrs. R. L. Spivey of Asheville, N. C.; Mrs. J. R. Crooke of Woodruff; and Mrs. Reid Putnam of Gray Court. The house was decorated with fall flowers. An enjoyable feature on Monday evening was the re-enact ment of childhood scenes and oc curences. The occasion was the birthday of Mrs. McCoy. Thomwell Circle Has Monthly Meeting On Wednesday evening of the past week Misses Julia and Helen Porter were hostesses to members of the Edith Dewese Lynn circle of Tliornwell Memorial Church at their home on Young Drive. Mrs. A. M. Copeland gave the Bible study on "TTie Growing Church,” after which a discussion of the topic was led by Mrs. James Camp. A sweet salad plate was enjoyed during a social hour which climax ed the meeting. Interesting Program On Hawaii Given The first fall meeting of the Cen tury Club was held Tuesday after noon at the home of Mrs. Layton Fraser. Presenting a study of organized terntories of the United Slate*, Mrs. A. J. Thackston gave e delightful presentation of the history, customs ‘and people of Hawaii. Col. and Thackston were stationed on the Island of Oahu for two years Miss Nancy Thackston, dressed In native costume, lave an interpretive Ha waiian dance Miss Sara Anderson of Summer too, and Mrs J. L Anderson of Wilson. N C., were guests of the dub. Prior to the program a covered dish supper was enjoyed. Miss Nancy LanfonM was in charge of the program. Mrs S. B. Loftis led the devotional on “Keys That Open Doors.” Miss Lanford introduced her aunt, Mrs Annie Coolidge of San Francisco, Calif., who having traveled in many coun tries of the world made an inter esting talk on '‘seme keys that open doori" from her own expe riences Buffet Supper Given By Mrs. Copeland Entertains Club, Additional Guests Entertaining members of her card club and several additional guests Mrs. John Mimnaugh was hostess for three tables of bridge on Thursday afternoon of the past week. Zinnias in varied shades were used in decoration. Between pro gressions guests were invited into the dining room for refreshments of sandwiches, tea and cookies served in buffet style. An .attractive fruit arrangement featuring grapes and apples centered the table. Score prizes were presented Mrs. Marvin Gault and Mrs C. E King. The officers %f the F. H.
