Hoilings scored a smashing victory
Tuesday in a run-off election for
governor of South Carolina with
Donald S. Russell, former president
of the University of South Carolina.
The tall, handsome lieutenant gov
ernor apparently registered impres
sively among those voters who had
favored Anderson Mayor William C.
Johnston, eliminated in the first
Democratic primary election June
10.
Hoilings, 36, surprised observers
in Tuesday’s run-off by holding down
Russell's margin in the populous
areas of Greenville and Spartan
burg.
It was in these cities and in Co
lumbia that Russell drew his heav
iest support in the first primary
when he trailed Hoilings by 26,000
votes

Allen D. Coleman, who got into the -rv^nd race af-er a
series of recounts, won the nomination for Treasurer over
Herchel VV. Wilson, who led in the first primary on -June 10.
Coleman’s vote was 1,049, w-hile Wilson registered 4.817..
Furman K. Thomason was the \ ictdr in the race for Super
visor. He was second man in the first primar. Thomason de-
feateil Bennie B. Blakely, 4,200 to 3,691.
George M. (Vnland. with 1.1 ">4 vote-*, got no<i f<»r Com
missioner over Claude A. Patton, with 3,692.
Robert N. Bigham was nominated for Magistrate in Jacks
Township. He defeated James M Copeland. Jr . l3o to 103.
A three-man delegation to the S. C. House of Representa
tives was nominated in the first primary, including Justin A.
Bridges, William C. Dobbin.-, and T. David Sloan. Jr Dobbins
and Sloan are incumbents, while Bridges ;s a former House
member.
One Commissioner, incumt»er>t Paul S. <) D**u. was renomi
nated in the first primary, as were three un«'pposed candi
dates: Miss Jennie V Culbertson for Auditor. J. Hewlette
Wasson for IVobate Judge, arxi J l.erov Bum - for Sufierinten-
dent of Education. **
