EVERYDAY COUNSELOR By Dr. Herbert Spangh It takes constant care, work and. repair to maintain anything in this world, whether it be a building, a machine, a business, an institution, a marriage—yes, a life. In England and in Western Eu rope I was impressed with the. re pair and renovation of ancient! buildings, churches, and cathedrals. When we attended a service in Westminster Abbey in London, a portion of this great church was filled with scaffoldnig. Dust from the repair work was in evidence everywhere. For years these ancient churches and cathedrals have been falling to pieces. Inside these magnificent buildings, death-watch beetles or termites eat quietly, steadily, and disastrously. Their food is ancient wooden beams, and unless they are stopped, the roaf will fall U • “Junk tbr cathedrals." Is the ad vice of some Many say that, they are only good for American tourists to photograph • , By modern standards those beau tiful old cathedrals are far too large. They cannot be heated They cost an enormous sum to be main tained for services. Many of them contain no pews, only chain. If these beautiful old cathedrals are to be saved from ruin, which has long ago befallen many of the old British abbeys, vigorous repair and restoration must be undertak en. Many Europeans want them maintained, but they haven’t the money. American tourists help a great deal. Sad to relate, not only are the British cathedrals crumbling, but so is the church itself and interest in religion. On the other hand relig ious life in America is active and spiritual hunger is apparent every- la England thord M tttUe evidence of either The spiritual de- theae great cathedrals Is not evi dent today The British have a greet problem with their cathedrals In America there is s noted contrast where new church building to evident every where, along with increased interest in the Christian religion But the forces of materialism are likewise growing, and the termite* of secu larism arc gnawing away at our spiritual vitality. Witness the in crease In alcoholism, the break down of the home and Christian home life, and secularization of Sunday. God set aside one day in seven for 'man's spiritual restoration. He misuses and prostitutes it to his own peril. More and more places of business are being - kept open on Sunday. Sad to relate, more and more ar patronizing them. This is nr. Plymouth'* com petitor* also entered cars with 6-cylinder engines (sup posedly more economical I but Plymouth beat every car to its dam—V-Bs and 6s alike! * Tlus Utir winning Plymouth to exactly the same Brhe- stance—one of the most important factors in Plymouth's smashing win i* the new “Fuel-Saver” Choke that you get at no extra cost on all Plymouth V-8s.
