Cotton Allotment Totals 739,957 Acres Clemson, Nov. 30 — Farmers in South Carolina will have 739,957 acres available on which to grow their 1958 upland cotton crop, ac cording to W. S. Funk, state ASC administrative officer, Columbia. He says this figure represents the state’s share of the national acreage allotment of 17,391,30^ acres an nounced in October, plus the state’s apportionihent from the 100,000-acre national reserve to take care of minimum small farm allotments. Thursday, December 5, 1957 * He explains that according to tie law no" state will receive an allot ment for upland cotton for 1958 which is less than the smaller of 4,000 acres or the highest acreage planted to cotton in the state in 1955, 1956 and 1957. Farmers who produced upland cotton in 1957 will vote in a nation al referendum December 10 to de termine whether marketing quotas will be operative for the 1958 crop of upland cotton. At least two- thirds of those voting must approve the quotas if they are to continue in effect. Acreage allotments, how ever, will be in efect for 1958 cot ton no matter how the vote goes.
