The Chronicle. 4-H Dariy Calf Club Members Successful In Shows Laurens County 4-H Dairy Calf Club members made good showing at the Piedmont -Interstate Fair in Spartanburg and at the Newberry County fair last week, s, - Competition was strong at both places. In the Holstein class at Spartanburg, Frank Brown, son ‘or Mr. amTMrsT D. Eugene'Brown, of the Bailey community, placed first with his junior calf, and his brother, David, placed in the sen ior calf class and also first in pro duce of dam class., William, an other brother, placed first in senior yearling clas and also first, in the age cow class. In the showmanship class the Brown brothers took their share of these honors in that William placed first, David placed second, and Frank placed fifth. In the fitting class Wililam took first place, Da vid took fourth, and Frank placed seventh David also showed the grand champion Holstein animal of the fair. There were more than 25 head of Holstein cattle competing in the Holstein breed classes. Laurens county took first place in the county group, and Billy Brock ington, Thornwell Orphanage 4-H club member, won a trip, to Chica go in the fitting and showing con test class. In the Ayrshire class at Spartan burg there w’ere approximately 60 head of cattle. In showmanship Terry Simmons, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Sim : mons, of Ware Shoals, placed first. Wilford Simpson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Simpson, of Cross Hill, placed second with Kay Baumber- ger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ar thur Baumbergpr^T of the Hickory Tavern comjxtuiity, placing third, and Perryj Simpson, brother of Wilford, placing fourth in the jun ior show. Dianne Baumberger, , sister to Kay Baumberger, placer first in the senior calf class, with Jimmy Griffin, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Grifin, of Ware Shoals, placing sec ond. .Perry Simpson placed second in the junior calf class. Kay Baumberger placed first with her junior yearling, and Terry Simmons placed third. In the sen ior yearling group, Johnny Baum berger, brother to Kay and Dianne, placed first, and Jimmy Simmons, brother to Terry, placed second. I n the two-year-old Ayrshire group. Perry Simpson placed first and his brother, Wilford, placed second. Jimmy Simmons took first place in the four-year-old cow class, with his brother, Terry, tak ing second place. In the Ayrshire fitting class, first place went to Perry Simpson; sec ond place to K a y Baumberger; third place to Wilford Simpson: j and fourth place to Jimmy Sim mons. In the Guernsey show at Spar tanburg, in which seven counties showed a total of 65 dairy animals, Billy Brockington showed the only Guernsey animal from Laurens county and placed fifth in fitting and sixth in the four-year-old class. At the Newberry fair Thornwell Orphanage club members showed Guernsey animals. In the junior show William Campbell placed first in showmanship, and first in the senior yearling class. Michael Wickham, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Wickham, placed second in the junior calf class and Joe Walker placed third. Johnny Richey plac ed second with his junior calf, and James Flannagan placed fifth with his junior yearbng. In the open Guernsey shbw, Thornwell Orphanage 4-H club members took several placed in keen competition. Michael Wick ham placed fifth in the junior calf class, and Thornwell Orphanage Farm placed second in the class. Marlar, of Fountain Inn, showed his 4-H club dairy ani mals in the junior division of the Jersey class at the Newberry fair and placed first in showmanship; third in fitting third in age cow class; fourth in the two-year-old class;' and fifth in the junioF'year ling class. In the open show for Jerseys, Gene placed second with his age cow; fourth with his junior year ling; second with ,his senior calf, and second with his junior calf.
