Surprisingly enough, this was the admonition some 200 years ago by the English poet, Edward Young. Of course he wasn’t refer- ; ring to dri ving i speed, but it’s still mighty good advice for motorists —especially in view of some, recent statis- . tics released ^ , by the Nation- Miss Smith al Safety Council. These figures show that, in 37 per cent of all fatal accidents, speeding is a factor. No other single violation occurs so often. Speeding increases the,, like- • lihood of an accident. The greater the speed, the less time you have to react in an emer gency. And it takes longer, nat urally, to halt a speeding car than one moving slowly. As a matter of fact, it takes al most five times the distance to stop a car- at 50 miles per hour as it does at 20 miles. Many motorists think they're driving safely when they observe the posted speed limit. But a state or city speed limit is merely a maximum speed under ideal con ditions. You also must consider the condition of the road, znotor vehicle and driver; weather and" visibility; amount and type of tra r fic. Furthermore, excessive speed not only is unnecessary, but useless. Studies show that m speeder gains little time on a _ trip — hardly enough to justi fy the risk. In city traffic ex cessive speed makes for uncom fortable driving with frequent stopping for lights, quick brak ing, and increased danger.c And on the highway, everything a speeder accomplishes may b« wiped out py an accident — in cluding the right to drive. Just for fun 1 jotted down q list of ways the telephone could help in planning a Halloween party, or unV other party. The list of calls w’ent something like this: invite the guests—maybe a dozen or more: order refresh ments; order extra ice; have the cleanqr pick up my best -suit: call around to see who has Halloween decorations^— "and so it went It's really surprising how such a list Can grow. Just goes to show how much we all rely on the telephone to get things dope quickly.'You try it sometime. The nip in the air has stirred a lot of activity around here—fall housecleaning, painting, repairing and the like. Seems to me it would be just the, time for folks to give their rooms a “new look too with some bright color phones to harmorrize or contrast with new color » schemes. Extra color -phones are a joy to have and to use in bedrooms/ kitchen or den — where- ever you find most con- ignttj And you can have several for It/s total addi-*- tional cost than you’re now paying for your main phone.
