Pages were Beth Gruber, Jean Carolyn Smith and Jane Arnold. The guest speaker for the meet ing was M. B. C a m a k. a well known educator and writer, of Ware Shoals. Mrs. J. H. Power, East District director, led the symposium pro gram plan of work for 1957-58. 1116 goals for the coming year are: 1. Increase enrollment by each club securing at least two new members during the year. 2. Encourage a larger attendance at the state meeting in June by the Council paying half of the expenses of one delegate from each home demon stration club. 3. Complete goals on making improvements at t h e Laurens County Home. 4. Continue present goals cooperating with the Laurens County Fair, Electric Fair, giving two pairs of pajamas to the patients at State Park, from Laurens County and continue to help with 4-H club activities in the county. ETach of the depart mental chairmen gave the goals for their respective departments During the business session Mrs. J. S. Gray gave a report of the state meeting which was held at Winthrop College in June. Mrs. Guy Mahon gave a report for the treas urer. j The district directors gave awards to the clubs having t h e best club reports which were hand ed in at the district meetings in July. For the North District, first place went to Greenpond Home Demonstration club, second to Har mony, and third to Youngs. In the West District, Shiloh was f i r s t place winner, Trinity-Ridge sec ond, and Hickory Tavern third. Sandy Springs and Shiloh clubs tied for first place in the East Dis trict. Oak Grove was second place winner and Barksdale-Namie was third. Also during the busi ness session, Mrs. H. A Benner was elected first vice-president of the council to replace Mrs. George Cleckler who has moved out of the cpunty. Mrs. Sarah D. DeLoache pre sented awards to the presidents of six home demonstration clubs for their outstanding work during the Cancer Drive. Those receiving the awards were: Gray Court-Owings, Mrs. Meanes Moore; Hickory Tav ern, Mrs. Earl Abercrombie; Greenpond, Mrs. Guy Mahon; Trinity-Ridge, Mrs. J. S. G.ray; Cross Hill-Mountville, Mrs. H.- T. Jones; and Warrior Creek. Mrs W A. Robertson. The attendance gavel was pre sented to Mrs. J H. Martin, presi dent of Camak Home Demonstra tion club, as having the most mem bers attending the meeting “ and traveling the longest distance. Sec ond place in attendance went to Cross Hill-Mountville, and third place to Greenpond. Refreshments were served by the host club. Shary Grove Home Demonstra tion club will be host for the spring council meeting which will be held some time in April. Beta Club Has First Fall Meeting The Beta Club qf Clinton High School held its first fall meeting October 3, aid the following offi cers were lected to serve during the year. President: Cecil Davenport. Vice-President: Mary Jo Sloan. Treasurer: Wallace Boyd. Reporter: Georgia Young. The cluo meets the first Thurs day of eVich month. Oct. 15 —The admit tance of one church, reading of re ports and addresses were featured at the meeting of the Laurens Bap tist Association at the First Baptist Church here today. Northside Baptist Church of Wattsville, was admitted as the 4Lst church in the association. The Rev. Hugl\ Hazle is pastor. A letter was tead from Joanna Baptist Church in the Reedy River Association asking to be considered for membership in the Laurens Association. In a letter read by the modera tor, the Rev. J. A. Rice, Mt. Olive Baptist Church resolved that the church was opposed to racial in tegration in the local church, the Laurefis Baptist Association, the South Carolina Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Conven tion. The letter was dated Oct. 13 and referred to a special con ference at Mt Olive Church at which the resolution was passed. No action was taken by the asso ciation on the letter. Included in the reports was one on the cooperative program, pre sented by the Rev Kenneth Word. Dr. Horace Hammett, assistant secretary-treasurer of the state convention, responded to the re port The association adpoted a resolution that $75,000 go to the cooperative program. The Rev James Howard, super intendent of evangelism for the state convention, spoke after the report on evangelism by the Rev. J. W. Spillers. The Rev. W E Brant presented a report on min- isterial retirement. > John Farmer, state Brotherhood superintendent, and Cordell, state Royal Ambassadors leader, made talks following the report on Broth erhood by Fowler Brownlee. Dr. William A. Boyce, superin tendent of the State Hospital, talk ed to the church laymen and pas tors.
