Robert C Wasson, of Lau* rens. who sponsored legislation this year requiring building per mits on new construction in his county displayed-today a slip-of paper he described as the “first of the pennits to be issued.” It is for an addition to a dwell ing in Sullivan Township in School District 55, wnlh cost es timated at SI,500. Wasson’s bill applied to con struction costing $1,000 or more. The Senator hopes his applica tion and receipt'of the permit will serve to let others in the county realize the new law is now in full effect. Shrigley Is Signed To Braves' Contract Dick Shrigley, 22-year-old Pres byterian College football star and standout catcher with Joanna’s semi-pro Hornets, today was sign ed to a professional baseball oon- tn.ct with the Milwaukee Braves' organization. •« Shrigley, signed by scout Gil English, will report immediately to the Jacksonville Braves*'in the Class A South Atlantic League. A native of West Elizabeth, Pa., Shrigley stands 6-2 and tips the scales at 220 pounds. Batting and throwing righthanded, the Pres- byteriarf football whiz to date is hitting well aibdve the .500 mark with Joanna in the fast Central Carolina League. A Shrigley, regarded as a fine catching prospect, has been tag. ging the ball f ir extra bases, five of the home runs. A 2-year ole Herman in football, 4 Shrigley still .has two years of eligibility left with the Blue Hose oh the gridiron if he desires. Bill Crutchfield, of Furman, and formerly head coach at Pres byterian, praised Shrigley as one of the finest linebackers he's ever coached.- .. - - — Under the S1AA rules’. Shrigley can finish out his eligibility in football at Presbyterian. Tonight Shrigley couldn’t be reached for comfnent as to whether he plans to finish his football career with the Blue Ho(se. 1 The Presbyterian coaches, all out of town, were, not available for comment. Shrigley, if he should pass up football, would be a big lois's in the Presbyterian gridiron j plans for this coming fall. S. C. Legislators Congratulate Gray, Boys State Governor - The South Carolina House ^pf Representatives Thursday "ex tended its official congratulations to Carroll, G<ay, Jr., of Gray Cou$, for his election as govern or of Boys’ State. A concurrent resolution honor ing the young man was introduc ed today by Reps. W. Paul Cul bertson, William C. Dobbins, Jr., and T. David Sloan, al lof Lau-' rens Cbunty, and John A. May, of Aiken county. It praises young Gray for having been 1 accorded “one of the greatest honors which can be^ bestowed upon a high school boy,’ ’and said that ev eryone in Laurens County and in the state could be proud of the youngster. The resolution stated: WHEREAS, Carroll Gray, Jr., was today elected Governor of Boys’ State; and WHEREAS, this is one of the greatest honors which can be be stowed upon a high school boy; and WHEREAS, young Gray has brought honors to his home coun ty, the £reat County of Lauren t s; and .. WHEREAS, every person in the County of Laurens and the State of South Carolina is proud and happy over young Gray’s election as Governor of Boys’ State. Now, therefore, Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate con curring: That Carroll Gray, Jr., of Gray Court in Laurens County be con gratulated by the General Assem bly of South Carolina upon being elected Governor of Boys’ State Disabled Workers Urged To Contact Security Office (Bridges) speeding?” The pa trolman replied, “Yes. he had been and was speeding. Disabled workers in the Clinton area who have not filed to es tablish their disability under the social security law should do so as soon as possible. Miss Martha Pressly, manager of the Green wood social security office, em phasized that failure to file an application before July 1 of this year may result in loss of bene fits. Monthly cash disability bene fits are payable for July, 1957, to qualified workers 50 years old or older. Benefits should be ap plied for by June 30, if the work er became totally disabled and has not worked since before Jan uary, 1955. The principal require ment is a severe disability after at least five years of earnings covered by social security. June 30 of this year is also an important deadline date for work ers under age 50 who have been disabled for prolonged periods. Individuals who do not apply to freeze their social security rec ords by that time may forfeit- 1 their rights to disability benefits at age 50, to old' age benefits, or benefits to their survivors.
