A jury in Laurens County Gen eral Sessions Court Thursday night found two young Laurens boys guilty of involuntary man slaughter in connection with the deaths of two Laurens girls in a highway accident June 3, 1955. The boys are Charles A. Senn III and Clifton Nelson. Judge J. B. Pruitt, of Anderson, sentenced each of the 16-year-old youths to 15 months suspended and put them on probation for 3 years. He also assessed a fine of $250 each against the'defendants. Judge Pruitt also ordered that the youths ’driving privileges be tak en from them for a period of 4 years. In passing sentence, Judge Pruitt waived the condition that the two boys report to the prboa- bation officer monthly. He said he was removing this requirement because of the plea of defense at torneys that the boys probably would be away at college during their probationary period and it would impose an unreasonable in convenience on them to have to report monthly. The jury received the case late Thursday afternoon after a three- day trial, marked by heated ex changes betwe?*n lawyers and re peated objections. The jury was out about one hour and 20 mim utes. Victims of the accident were Edna Roberta Callahan and Pa tricia Ann Lanford. The accident occurred when members of the Laurens school ninth grade were| returning home from a picnic at, Curry’s Lake near Gray Court. A j Ford driven by Senn and a Dodge driven by Nelson crashed into a truck about four miles from Lau rens on the Greenville highway as the truck attempted a left turn off the highway. Both cars w’ere filled with ninth grade pupils. Both the Callahan and Lanford girls were riding in the Nelson car. There were two charges against slaughter'and reckless homicide. Defense attorneys immediately made a motion for a new trial, and Judge F^uitt said the motion would be argued before him in Anderson at a date to be agreed upon. , Judge Steve C. Griffith, of Newberry, presided over Mon day’s session before turning the court over to Judge Pruitt forjthe trial of the car-truck collision case. ~/r ■ Cases handled by Judge Grif fith were: . James Leroy Barks dale, pled guilty to house breaking and larceny, and was given 6 months; Sims James, charged with lar ceny and receiving stolen goods, pled guilty to grand larceny and was given 12 months; Arthur Wallace Speight, charged with house breaking and larceny and receiving stolen goods, pled guilty to house breaking and petty lar ceny, drew one year, sentence suspended aftej; four months, two years probation, the time he spent in jail satisfying the four months Henry Bolden, chardged with larceny and receiving stolen goods, two counts, pled guilty to grand larceny, given eight months on each count, to run concurrent ly, both counts suspended, proba tion one year; PleasuReed, charg ed with non-support, pled guilty, given one year or $1,500, suspend ed on payment of $10 weekly, placed on probation. William T. Gresham, Charles Fuller, William L. Baker, Jr., Arthur Baker, Jr., and Tommie Baker, charged with larceny and receiving stolen goods, pled guilty to malicious mischief, Charlie Fuller sentenced to the State Re formatory until 21 years of age, suspended, two years probation, the other four, eight months each, suspended. Robert Simpson, pled guilty to non-support, sentenced to six months or $1,000, suspended, plac- e don probation, provided he pay his wife $5.00 weekly. Cardell Foggy, pled guilty* to malicious mischief and was given one month or $100; Sammie Lee Jones, charged with asault and battery with intent to kill and carrying concealed weapons, pled guilty to carrying concealed wea pons and was given one month or $25; Arthur Fuller, pled guilty to violation of the liquor laws, and was given one month or $100. Following the trial of the two boys, Judge Griffith returned to the bench, and court adjourned Friday at noon after disposing of one jury case and hearing a num ber of gqjilJy plaas. ' > Thomas Ferguson was tried in his absence and found guilty of driving under the Influence of in toxicants, second offense, in the day’s only jury trial. Judge Griffith gave Ferguson a suspended sentence of 12 months in jail or $1,000 fine, provided he pay $500 or serve six months. Judge Griffith issued a sealed sentence after the jury’s verdict,' but: Ferguson returned later in the day and the Clerl^ of Court read the sentence. T • J' *> Solicitor William T.
