Tennis Tourney To Begin Here Next Thursday Presbyterian college will be the heavy favorite to capture its 17th consecutive state net title in the South Carolina Intercollegiate Championship Tennis Tourna ment which opens here Thursday. To be held in conjunction with this meet again, this year will be the South Carolina Invitational, also limited to college play and open to all players on the state’s six teams except Presbyterian. The University of South Caro lina is defending champion in the Invitational which was orig inated three years ago because of the declining interest in recent years in the championship meet. Although Carolina is the de fending titlist in the "Invitational the College of Charleston squad will return with the individual champion of the past two years, in the person of Jack Fischer. He is seeded first in the Invita tional, followed by Carolina’s Le von Gantt who lost out to Fischer in the finals last year. ' Invitational entries find the Gamecocks, Furman and Erskine all bringing six players each, while the College of Charleston and the Citadel bring two each. Favored Presbyterian has sev en entries in the Championship tournament, to which it is re stricted. Seedings for this meet give the top six spots to Blue Hose players in this order—Johnny B-rownlow, Harvey Jackson, Guice Potter, Jim Shakespeare, Harry Hoffman and Jimmy Peck —with Fischer seeded seventh and Gantt ranked eighth. Absent from this year’s cham pionship flight will be Presbyte rian’s Allen Morris, number two ranked Southern amateur and Wimbledon quarter finalist, who graduated after winning his fourth straight state singles crown last spring. His winning doubles partner, Brownlow, is back. Play opens in the Invitational at 10:00 a. m. Thursday; in the Championship at 1:30 p. m. The action is,scheduled to continue through next Friday, with the singles and doubles winners in each meet determined on the fin al afternoon. Students Present "Come See" Program The students of the two sixth grade classes at the Junior High School presented a "“Come See” program on Thursday afternoon inViting the parents and other guests to attend. Mrs. B Sumerel and Miss Mary Brabham, the class teachers, had directed the students who had prepared flags of various coun tries,-charts, posters, maps and friezes on topics studied for the year in English geography, read ing and spelling. Note books and other exhibits were also on dis play. The students directed the guests, explained the displays and served refreshments of punch and cook ies to about one hundred and fifty who attended. Bolick Is Chairman National Student Assn. . Harry Bolick, Clemson college senior from Kinards, is the new regional chairman of -the Nation al Student Association. , Bolick was elected at the Vir- ginia-CaroHnas' regional confer ence being held this month at Hollins College, in Roanoke, Va. Clemson is a ‘freshman’ member of the national organization, lending added significance to the selection. Bolick is the son of Capt. and Mrs. ■ Harry E. Bolick, former Clinton residents, now serving with the army in Europe. He makes his home with his aunt, Mrs. Charles Workman, and Mr. Wokman, near Kinads.
