(Matthew 5:48.) To be perfect is so sublime that instead of kindling our enthusi asm it sometimes slows down vigilance, deadens the spirit, unnerves the will. The goal appears so inaccessible we think the best thing to do is turn our eyes from such heights. It is no easy task for us to fulfill our Master’s word, "Be ye . .(. perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” We can accomplish it, however, if we strive to be perfect on the plane of son- ship as God is perfect on the plane of fatherhood. Our doubts dis appear and hope returns in the light of a truth which is not impos sible for us to attain. It is not enough for us to consider the majesty and power and greatness of God. We are to seek the Lord with all diligence and lay claim to sonship with the Father through Christ Jesus, our Re deemer. PRAYER O Lord, our goal is to be perfect in Thee. In our own tlrength we can never achieve this blessed hope. We come to Thee. Guard and guide our thoughts that Thy strength may be made perfect in weakness. Angelo Incelli (Italy) By SPECTATOR.. COMMENTS on MEN AND THINGS Well, are you in favor of Eis enhower and a Democratic Con gress? I find myself less and less dis posed to support Stevenson, re membering not only what he has said, and continues to say, but keeping in mind his great sup porters, Harry Truman and El eanor Roosevelt. Of course we can remember unkind slurs on Stevenson by both Truman and Kefauver. The Stevenson they so belittle is the same Stevenson they are endbrsing and eulogizing today. That really is nauseating, ^don’t you think? Editor Herbert Hucks of The Berkeley Democrat, Moncks Cor ner, has devoted a lot of thought to our National problem; I quote him: “Last week petitions carrying almost 37,000 signatures were filed with the Secretary of State asking that^the names of eight in dependent electors be placed on the Presidential ballot in Novem ber, almost four times the num ber required. This assures voters who do not wish to support either hte Stevenson-Kefauver or the Eisenhower ticket a chance of casting their ballots in the elec tion. ' We do not believe that these 37,000 voters signing the petitions are Republicans. As a matter of j fact Republicans in the state have their ticket and no doubt will support it almost to the man. No, these 37,000 are Democrats (capi-1 tal D this time), who feel that they owe no loyalty to the party, the leaders, of wl^ch would sell us down the river, in fact are planning to do so, should they gain control of congress and the presidency. This writer has tried to think the situation through, weighing it from several angles. At this time (though we reserve the right to change our minds) we are convinced that it will not be to the best interest of the South for the Republicans to win control of the house and senate. This would mean that southern senators and house members would lose im portant committee chairmanships, and might not be able to clock injurious legislation. For many years southern members of con gress, with the help of northern Republicans, have been able to stave off legislation such as the FEPC, etc. Take away their lead ership, and the results might mean disaster to the South. On the other hand, we believe that the country as a whole will be safe if President Eisenhower is re-elected. Peace is threatened every month, every week, almost every day. Knowing war at first hand, and now having had almost four years as a peace-time presi dent, we feel that with his hand at the helmet,'there is a better chance of avoiding war. Another danger to the South with a Democratic President and congress is the promised repeal of the Taft-Hartley law. This would kill all state Right-to- Work laws, and again give labor union bosses a free hand to refuse jobs to any and all who refused to become union members. Sputh Carolina has such a law and be lieves that it is right. Still another danger lies in the Democratic pledge to enact, or a? least support, legislation which would kill the right to filibuster in the senate against legislation which would injure the South. Time and again the filibuster has been the last, and mostly suc cessful, resort / • We know that as a rule it is considered best for a President to have a friendly congress be hind him, that is a piisjority in both houses, members of his own party. This time, with so many vital issues at stake, we believe that a Republican President and a Democratic Congress will be safest for the country, at least for the South. We know that President Eisenhwoer has ability and is recognized as a world lead er. Our Carolina papers are not easily deceived; nor are they disposed to quibble; they are vig orous in their advocacy of good government. Editor Davis, of Barnwell, Camden, Willistou, and other cen ters, does not agree with those who think of chairmanships. Hear my friend Davies, in The Barnwell People-Sentinel: “We get the bias pain every time we hear Congressmen and Senators ranting that, in order to retain their important ‘key’ chair- rhanships and thereby protect their constituents from the big wolf, they must support the na tional ‘Democratic’ ticket. All of which, of course, is mere piffle. As a matter of fact, if the Dem ocrats retain control of the House and the Senate, Senators East- land, of Mississippi, Russell, of Georgia, Johnston, of South Caro lina, and all of the others simi larly placed will lose ‘nary’ a chairmanship. They lost nothing when four Southern states sup ported Strom Thurmond .as the States’ Rights presidential homi- nee in 1948, nor when the Inde pendents supported Eisenhower in 1952; and wasn’t Senator Thur mond received with open arms into ‘the party’ after his success ful revolt in 1954 In a ‘write-in’ campaign? And we might point out. in passing that, when thun derstorms prevented Senator Olirt D. Johnston from casting his bal lot for President Truman in 1948, W lost not a single amolu- ment of office. On the other hand, if the Republicans regain control of the Congress, all of their precious championships are gone with the wind, anyway. The use of such fallacious ar gument is merely an attempt to ‘save x face’ for attempting to sell the South down the river, and should fool nobody.” The forty thousand petitioners for an independent electoral tick et speak in trumpet blasts to those who efing to outworn party loyalty. As a matter of fact we have only the Democratic party machinery within the state and most of us are Democrats cer tainly within the state, the coun ties and towns: there is no other political machinery setup. We have no quarrel with it; nor do I challenge our brethren who seem willing to sing the Stevenson ship of state in the stormy billows of national politics. We South Carolinians must stand together on certain funda mental issues. I think we do when the issues are clearly label led; but on national issues we stand apart, sometimes. The amazing fact is that the issues which bind us together are being, assailed by both national parties, the Democratic party being viru lent in its attitude. So then the logic of circumstance is thrown out of the window by our neigh bors who support Stevenson, Ke fauver, Truman and Eleanor. Of course, the Independent Electors should be elected as a protest against arrogant imbecility cloth ed in the raiment of both politi cal parties. No one can measure the moral or inspirational value of a right eous stand. When a people throw all sorts of selfish considerations to the winds and resolutely pro claim their adherence to princi ples they ennoble themsleves and dignify their citizenship.
