Greenwood Tops Clinton 18-8 To Take League Six Lead Greenwood defeated Clinton 10- ;8 last Wednesday evening in Jo anna to take over first place in League Six. 4 Greenwood took the lead by scoring one run in the top of the first, but the local boys took the lead in the bottom of the third on triple by Pearson. Two walks, a triple by Bell and an error gave Greenwood 3 runs in the top of the fourth to knot the count 4-4. Clinton came' right bade in the bottom of the fourth and went ahead 5-4 on a triple by John son and Floyd’* sacrifice fly to the outfield. Greenwood scored 2 runs in the top of the sixth on a dropped fly ball in the outfield, a single by Ross, a hit batsman, a base on balls and a sacrifice fly. With Greenwood leading 6-5 in the 7th inning, an unusual play oc curred. With Greenwood batting in the top of the 7th, the lead-off hitter, Traynham, hit a Texas leaguer to short right. In stretch ing it into a double he over ran second base. The Clinton short stop tagged the runner out, but the base umpire ruled that he was safe. Coach Burnett appealed to the base umpire who said that he had not seen the play. Later he appealed to the plate umpire who also said that he had not seen the play. This was unusual as Trayn ham was the only base runner and the ball was in play ail the way. It is apparent that 'both umpires, Mauldin and Woods, “goofed” on this play and as a result it cost Clinton a very costly run as the next hitter, Botts, singled to drive across the run. Sease proceeded to strike out the next hitter and got the next batter on a fly ball to center. The missed tap cost the local boys a run and instead of one run behind they found themselves 2 runs behind, 7-5. The local boys came to life In the bottom of the 8th to score 3 runs and go ahead 8-7. Floyd led off by being safe on an error, Pearson walked, Cooley struck out, but Smith singled to load the bases. Sease then drove a smash off the abort stop’s glove to score Floyd and Pearson, with Smith taking third and Sease second on the play. With first-base open and one out Greenwood decided not to pitch to June Raines, a dangerous hitter, and put him on to again .load the bases. Samples hit a slow roller to second which the second baseman “hobbled” . and Smith raced home. With the bases loaded James struck out Archie and Johnson to retire the side. Greenwood started the 8th trail ing 8-7 as Rowe singled. Traynham then singled through the middle and Rowe was out trying to reach third. On this play, the plate um pire ruled that Rowe was out while the base umpire gave the safe sign. The base runner was out a* it was the plate umpire’s call. With Traynham on first, Sease pitching carefully to the hitters, walked Botts and Hall to load the bases. Godfrey then drove a 0-2 pitch to left center to send all three run ners across. Sease retired the next two hitters, but the damage had been done. Clinton failed to score ■fin the 8th and Greenwood had gone on top by winning 10-6. Both team* had eleven hits as Traynham had 3 and Bell, Rowe and Botts 2 each for Greenwood. For Clinton, Samples had 3 hits and Smith, Sease and Raines 2 each. It seems that everything hap pened in last Wednesday night’s game and the fans were really get ting on the umpires for swne of their calls. Auto Registrations In County Increase Laurens county had nearly 1,- 000 more automobiles registered the first seven months of this year than last year, according to a report from the S. C. Highway Department. The actual number registered for the seven months was 14,352 vehicles as against 13,482 last year. Over 35,000 more automobiles and buses were registered for the state in the same period this year than last year, according to the report. The new standards for wheat to go into effect after July 1, 1956, allow no more than one rodent pellet per pint and no more than one per cent insect damage for wheat in interstate transit. In the final end the producer* take the loss whatever it might be. Any cotton farmer with old cotton allotment acreage wishing to take part in ! the soil bank pro gram should contact the county ASC office and make application by July 20. , The minimum conservation contract is for three years; the maximum for tracts for tree 10 years. Con- cover, however, may extend for 15 years, and three-year contracts apply only to land which will be continued in vegetative cover A meeting of ASC county com mitteemen and the county agent was held last week and the regu-. la lions governing the soil bank acreage reserve program were discussed The program that is now being rushed applies to 1856 only. Dairy Farm Tour Arthur Baumberger, of the Hickory Tavern community, and president of the State Ayrshire association, has announced that plans are underway ^or a dairy farm tour of three Ayrshire com mercial dairies of th e county. The tour will begirnon the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Simpson, of Cross Hill July 13 at 10:30 a. m. and end in the afternoon at Mr. and Mrs. Baumberger’s farm. There will be one or two other Ayrshire dairy farms included on the tour but these have not yet been selected. The tour is open to any dairy man regardless of the breed of his cattle. Laurens county Ayrshire breeders have some rather good producing herds and have always made a good showing at the Lau rens county fair. . Aynhirs Sals There is to be held at the Lau rens county fair grounds August 22 the annual Ayrshire dairy cat tle sale. Further information on ! this sale will be given at a later \ date. Farmers To Vote July 20 The wheat marketing quotas and wheat referendum for the 1957 crop will be held July 20 as announced by Secretary Benson, who proclaimed a national wheat marketing quota for the 1957 wheat crop as required by law. The secretary has announced a wheat acreage allotment of 55,000,000 acres for 1957. This is the same number of acres as was in effect in 1956, and is the minimum national allotment specified by law. Any wheat producer in com mercial, or who will have more than 15 acres of wheat for har vest for grain in 1957 is eligible to vote in the marketing quota referendum. Twq-thirds of the vote in the referendum must fa vor marketing quotas before they can be put into effect. If quotas are provided, and farmers stay within their allotted wheat ac reage, they will be eligible for the full level of price support. All farmers may grow 15 acres of wheat with no penalty, but those fanners who expect to se cure support price from th® gov ernment must stay within the wheat acreag allotment which may be more or less than 15 acres. Inspsct Stored Grain For Insoct Damage Stored grain should be inspect ed often to see if insects are pres ent and treated with proper fumi gation. Information card number 48, “Fumigating Stored Grains and Peas,” published by Clemson College Extension Service, gives information on treating grain. The publication is free for the asking at the county agent’s of fice. In ten months in 1955 the Pure Food and Drug administration seized 14 cars of wheat and di verted iff cars to non-food use. These cars contained more than two rodent pellets per pint or had more than two per cent insect damaged wheat. This represent ed a loss of up to $800 or more per car.
