Who Uses Most Milk? Urban families use more milk per person than rural families who do not own cows. This informa tion is given in a study recently completed by the Research Home Economics department of the S. C. Agricultural Experiment station! This study of how 528 urban families used milk complements a recent study made of 504 rural families. The two give a statewide picture of milk consumption in South Carolina. Compared with rural families without a home milk supply, the urban families used 1.4 quarts more -per person per week. The total average amount of milk equivalent used per person was the same for both urban and rural families—-4.2 quarts per week or nearly 2 l-<2 cups per day. The study shows that region and income affected the amount of milk used by both families. Pied mont families used more milk than Coastal families, and families with larger income also used more milk. However, 36 per cent of the rural families in the study had a home milk supply, and they used larger quantities of milk. This fact raised the average milk consumption to equal amounts per person for both groups. ., Compared with rural families, the urban families showed a more uniform pattern of milk consump tion because fewer of them used extremely large or extremely small amounts of milk. Phyllis Drake, assistant station home economist, who worked on the study, points out that all low income families, as well as teen age girls and adult women in all groups need to use more milk. The home economist explains that adult -women have special need for milk—to protect their own health and to protect the health of their children. The study also shows that many girls reaching their teens con sume very little milk or none at all. -But most children like milk and will readily drink liberal amounts if they’re properly en couraged to do so. Plmiento Pepper Acreage The final total acreage signed up hr fawners year ® Laur ens county to grow plmiento pep pers on contract for Pomona Prod ucts company, Griffin, Ga., is 218 acres, according to T. J. Harper, field representative for the com pany: Farmers are guaranteed $80 per ton for graded peppers. Pepper plants are expected to be deliver ed to the county about April 15. Fanners should have their land prepared by the time the plants arrive, and set plants in field at once. 5 Rats Don’t overlook feeding rat bait to those rats in the buildings over winter, -before they leave out in the spring weather to hedge rows and cover in abandoned fields. Remember rats coat $10 each and two rate, a male and a female, will produce offsprings of 350,- 000,000 rats in three years, allow ing for the normal death rate al so. t Rats carry fleas, lice and mites, and also a source of spreading ty phus fever to man. For best re sults, keep rat bait before rats throughout the year. We’ve got enough expense as things are with out having to feed rata. Dr. Felder Smith OPTOMETRIST V Phene 794 Laurens, S. C. i.
