Judge Johnson, who has served as a circuit judge since 1923, said he believed South Carolina schools for Negroes are better than those irw New York and Massachusetts or other northern states. And these schools were built by taxes paid almost entirely by white people, he continued. If the bars against integration are lowered, Jydge Johnson said “thousands of Negro school teach ers will lose their jobs.” Turning to other matters, Judge Johnson chided judges generally, specifically including himself, for being too lenient with criminals.
