Ruff, is quite ill at her home on Loide street, Newberry. Roosevelt Morgan underwent treatment at Joanna hospital several days last week. Mrs. Edith Lee was dismissed from the local hsopital December 3 following treatment. W. R. Mack was a patient at Joanna hospital for treatment several days last week. Mrs. Edna Ballard underwent surgery December 1 at Joanna hsopital. Miss Jean Russell was an over night patient at Joanna hospital for treatment recenly. George Simpson is a paient at the local hospital for treatment. Mrs. Joan Bishop was dismiss ed from Joanna hospital Sunday following treatment. Mrs. Eva Black is a patient at Joanna hospital, having under gone surgery on Monday. Woman's Club Enjoys Pro- Christmas Party Members of the Woman’s club enjoyed their annual Christmas party last Thursday at Joanna club. The club rooms were ar tistically decorated in bautiful hand-made decorations. These were made and placed at vantage points by members of the Girl Scout group, Pre-Teens, Teen- Agers and the Woman’s club. The president, Mrs. Lavinia Cooley, presided over the busi ness hour. New members, Mrs. G. N. Foy and Mrs. Frances War ner, were recognized. Also Mrs. Dick Hair, a visitor, was wel comed. Final plans were made for the cake sale at Belle’s De partment store December 3. The group also planned a chicken stew for January 27, and will as sist Mrs. Mildred Bowers in serv ing a Christmas dinner to a pri vate group on December 22 at the club house. Joanna Sisters were remem bered with gifts. Members of the Executive Board presented Mrs. Cooley with a beautiful skin bag fbr her Christmas gift. Party dainties, fruit cake, wiuts, coffee, and cold drinks were served. Thruoghout the house the Christ mas motif was carried out in the decorations. Those prseent included: Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Singing Session Announced There will be a singing session at the Fire Baptized church on Tillman Circle Dec. 11 at 2:30. The public is invited. Mrs. Marvin Smith Pastas Mrs. Bessie Furr Smith, 59, wife of Marvin E. Smith, died early Monday morning at the Jo anna Memorial hospital after several years of declining health. She was a native of Stanley County, N. C., but had made her home in Joanna for 45 years. She was a daughter of the late Henry C. and Abigail Hudson Furr. She was a member of the Joanna Baptist church. Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Mrs. W. E. Boyd and Miss Joyce Smith, both of Joanna; one son, Earl W. Smith of Greenville; one grandchbd; one sister, Mrs. Essie Smith of Newberry; three brothers, Thom as Furr of Joanna, J. L. and P C. Furr, both of Clinton. Funeral services were con ducted Tuesday at 3:30 p. m. at Joanna Baptist church by Rev. James B. Mitchell and the Rev. Ben F. Jones. Burial was in Rosemont cemetery in Clinton. Nephews were pallbearers. Mr, Purdy Honored Recently Joe Purdy was pleas antly surprised with a dinner at his home on Magnolia street. Mr. Purdy was 72 years old. Tom Thumb Banquet The Tom Thumb banquet was held at Presbyterian College last Thursday night with a large number in attendance. The Tom Thumb Queen of Joanna was Miss Janice Ruff. The Laurens county championship trophy was presented to the Joanna team which was undefeated during the season, by Robert Vance of Clinton. It was received by captain Jimmy Farmer and co captains Jerry Lewis and Larry Gamer. Terry Rowe was pre sented a trophy as the best de fensive player of the season.
