Cross Burned At Walterboro Editor's Home Walterboro, August 22 — A cross of food and cloth burned here tonight on the fence of W. W. W. Smoak, editor of the Press and Standard, whjch last week ran an editorial sharply criticiz ing renewed activity of a Ku Klux Klan roganization in South Carolina. Mr. &moak said his wife and daughter, while home alone, heard the crackling noise of the burning cross and called the po lice department. Patrolman Heyward Carter went to the home and exting uished flames on the cross. He said it apparently was saturat ed with kerosene. No evidence was found indi cating who propped the cross into the mesh wire fence. The editorial of the Press and Standard, a weekly newspaper, was entitled, "Shadow of Vul tures'*. Bring a Friend To Church With You 4 MODERN AS TOMORROW 4% T 'r% ii # i*' i isai ■vmm-'r*- Does going to church seem to you old-fashioned? Well, it is, for worship is as old as creation, yet erer-new. In church buildings before the fourteenth century these were no seats. Worshippers stood, or sat on cold damp fiooflfa hate legged stools were used. Today, churches compare with our finest buildings hi beauty, comfort, and convenience. Our speech habits have changed with advancing Scriptural style, too, has changed, yet neither meaning has been altered. The Bible's message remains the samfe - a gospel of good news filled with faith, hope, and love—for you, the same as for your forefathers. Then be old-fashioned. Go to church. Find for yourself a faith that is steadfast—“the same yesterday, today, and forever,”—yet modem as tomorrow.
