Monday, May 9 — The Poster contest in which the school chil dren were asked to participate, will close. Posters will be given to tthe judges. Tuesday, May 10—iHome inspec tion blanks will be returned. Plans are being made to haive pictures made of the children returning the blanks with the most corrections. Wednesday, May 11 — Posters will be on display in store windows on the square. Thursday, May 12—“Town In spection Day." Inspection day kick-off at Mary Musigrove hotel at 9:30. Mayor Hugh L. Eichelber- ger and Chamber President J. J. Cornwell will welcome the forty or more fieldmen to Clinton. The representative of the S. C. Field- men’s association will give the as signments to the fieldmen. Every one is invited. 10:00—Fieldmen with the help of the Boy Scouts will start check ing the town for fire hazards. The co-qperation of the citizens will be greatly appreciated. 7:30 (May lU)—In appreciation of the work of the South Caro lina Fieldmen’s association the Chamber of Commerce will have a dutch barbecue supper at Mary Lou ranch. Walter Lynch will serve the supper. The members are asked to make their reserva tions. Ladies are invited. Home Inspection Blanks Clinton will make an organized effort to become a fire safe city on Thursday, May 12. The S. C. fieldmen will inspect the build ings in the business area and oth er public buildings. The Chamber of Commerce hopes to reach the homes by the participation of the grammar school children. Each child in the grammar schools will be given a Home In spection blank and instruction folder, “Your Fire Safe Home,” which lists the major causes of fire and Do’s and Don’is in case of fire. This blank is a home fire safety check list and includes the follow ing hazards: Yard and garage, trash, leaves, etc. Housekeeping (basement, attic). Electrical (iwiring, appliances, etc.) Matches and careless smoking. What to do in case of fire. Home fire safety is a family job and the family takes part in the check-up to find and list haz ards. The "No’’ answers wild give you a picture of the fire hazards in your home, which you should correct at once. •Films will be shown and home inspection blanks will be given the students as follows: Bell Street school, Thursday, May 5 at 11:30. Florida Street school, Friday, May 6 at 10:30. Academy Street school, Friday, May 6 at 1:00. Providence school, time to be announced. As stated, home inspection is a family job, and the Chamber of Commerce will appreciate the co operation of all parents in this very worthy project. Dick As He Rounils'Out 20 Fine Years One of Raleigh’s best known and best loved miniaters is be ing honored this week as he rounds out his twentieth year as rector at the Church of the Good Shepherd. The Rev. James McDowell Dick through those years has be come regarded as a man who packs into his job just about ev ery fine quality anyone could reasonably expect The responsibility which must be carried by a minister these days is enormous. For more hours than most of us work to day’s preacher must spend his time visiting the sick and aged, helping some family with a trou blesome alcoholic, trying to help mend a faltering marriage—plus trying to iron out about every othed kind of problem no one else can handle. On top of this he is called upon to function as the chief adminis trator of the surprisingly compli cated business operation which today’s church has come to be. When the week-end rolls around the rest of us are relieved that we once again found the energy,; to get through another seven days. But not today’s minister. Sunday is his big day. He must conduct one or more services and deliver at least one sermon which is challenging, stimulat ing, comforting and inspiring. If and when he fails to fill all of these needs in a single sermon there are dark whispers among members of his congregation. A preacher, in short, probably has to please more people than any one in any profession. It hardly seems possible that Jimmy Dick has been at the Chhrch of the Good Shepherd for 20 years. But it must be noted that many of us—even of other churches and other faiths— would have missed something very wonderful if he had not been here all that time. (Editorial in The Raleigh, N. C,.
