The red flower is a symbol of affec tion for the living, a token of grateful appreciation of the mother's rich love so abundantly blessing her home. The white flower wom on this hallowed day is a tribute to the mother who has passed into the Great Beyond but who still lives in hearts Of grateful love. The Texas station has recently released the second new non-shattering variety, Rio, to fanners in the Southwestern states. Limited amounts of registered seed of the Palmetto variety will be available to interested farm, ers of the Southeast at the Clem- son Foundation Seed Certifica tion Department after April 1&. New Palmetto Sesame Opens Door To Possible New Southern Cash Crop Clemaon, May 1 — Palmetto, a new non.Niattering sesame va riety, has been developed and released by the South Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station, according to an announcement by Dr. O. B. Garrison, director of the station. The new variety represents many years of constant research by J. A Martin and J. H. Craw ford, associate and assistant hor ticulturist, respectively, at the Clemaon station, and other agri cultural workers in Texas and South America. * The interest in .sesame has been inspired by the fact that a new oilseed crop is needed as a supplement for cotton seed in the crushing operations of cotton oil mills throughout the South. In addition, many tons of the seed are used annually in making candy, cookies, and bread. Se same can also be a valuable live stock feed. After the oil is press ed from the seed the resulting cake or meal makes an excellent high protein livestock feed. An other important fact concerning sesame is that the oil and seed will keep for several years with out becoming rancid. With the development of the new non-shattering Palmetto va riety, the once ancient oilseed crop shows promise for die first time of opening up a new source of iooome for our cotton belt farmers. Why hasn’t the crop been grown extensively before? Al though the first sesame seed were introduced in America dur ing the 17th century at Charles. ton, South Carolina, die crop has always been unprofitable be cause harvesting had to be done by band and labor costs were high. The re search man they selected for the Job of unlocking the secret to a new non-shattering variety was J. A Martin, who has been with the Clemaon Horticulture Department since his graduation from Clemson in IfiM. Today Martin is probably one of the best informed people on the sub ject of sesame in the United States. Since IMS he and his associ ates have been working toward the development of a new vari ety of this ancient crop which is now very much in our future. Today, after 12 years of research, the new non-shattering variety which ripens uniformly and can be harvested mechanically is ready for release. The new variety was develop ed from several promising non shattering varieties contributed to Martin by Dr. D. G. La ogham of Maracay, Venezuela. Anoth. ear important factor in the de velopment of Palmetto was Dr. Langham’s suggestion that the multiple cross method of plant breeding be used in the sesame program. Martin’s decision to concentrate on this method prov ed sound. It produced a large number of strains and varieties from which the new Palmetto variety was selected. The yield of Palmetto ranges from 300 to 1,000 pounds of clean seed per acre depending upon the location and weather condit ions. The new variety has drouht, root knot nematode, and wilt resistance, but is susceptible t to Bacterial, Altenaria, and Cer- cospora leaf diseases which are controlled satisfactorily by the use of disease-free seed and seed treatments. The seed color is tan.
