Democratic Party Bigwigs Ignorant Of Southerners ♦ Editor The Chronicle; The high brass of the Nation al Democratic party appears to be unable to make up its mind concerning the castigation, if any, that shall be meted out to the “rebellious Southern rene gades’’ who fail to comply with the party's lovalty oath. There may be fears that some leading Southerners are setting a pattern by bolting the National party when it violates their own interpretation of honesty. First, it was decided no action would be taken to hedge a repeat performance in next year’s elec tion and thus assure a solid front. Evidently a solid front appears not to be forthcoming. Now former Democratic Na tional Chairman Stephen Mitch ell. says that the “renegades’ shall be barred from further par ticipation. To mention a few of the “undesirables” are such stal warts as James F. Byrnes, former governor of South Carolina: Gov. Allen Shivers of Texas; and Lou isiana Governor Robert Kennon. For the kingpins to be so flus- trated as to the inclusion of such unimpeachable, long-time demo cratic principled leaders, denotes i the unrest that prevails within the paryt’s inner sanctum. To nail he situation down fear appears to be the clincher to the problem. The high command knows that within the party's elite there will be no venturing aspirant of stature able to with stand the onslaught of the one they fear most—President Eisen hower—who has been required to pull chestnuts out of the fire of former administrations. The panorama of the police action in Korea, graft, corruption, and subversion in government of the reoent former regime makes no pretty picture. April 20, 1955 3c-M-12 of either major party should be aware of the calibre and integ rity of any long-stahding, proven Demrocrat before attempting to exile him. However, it is true here are some elected represen- tativs who will, as our now sen ior senator has proclaimed that— “rightly or wrongly,” he will ad here to his party’s label. Surely Senator OD would not be in league with Governor Mennen “Soapy” Williams of Michigan and Senator “Howling” Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, who have nothing good in their bag of tricks for the South. Yet, he did not raise his voice at the demon stration put on by “Soapy” on the floor of the 1952 convention against Jimmy Byrnes when he attempted to humiliate one who so long ago was cradled and Washington, April 16.—Presi- nourished in the birthplace of dent Eisenhower’s Council of Ec- the Democratic party. anomic Advisors estimated Friday Other Carolina representa- that the nation's total production lives, even they may have voted jumped by seven billion dollars in against Eisenhower, expressed quarter of this year, resentment at the latest bl 35 * by j approaching the all-time ex-boss Mitchell. But nary a high of mid-1953. word from Senator Johnston. It is about time some overly ambitious political upstart learn that they cannot browbeat, in timidate or tongue-lash into line some Southerp Democrats. With inherent honesty and persistence the once lowly Caro- j linian, Jimmy Byrnes, has at-1 tained a greater string of sue-1 cesses, both state and national, | than any other in history. Could it be that the Aiken tes timonial night might have help ed bring on this latest attack of Mr. Mitchell Best advice’would be to keep his pressure down. Also a litte righteous indigna tion against some Yankee no- gooders by Senator Johnston might help. EDWARD C. HENDERSON, Kinards, S. C. Hebron Baptist Raising Funds For New Church (Written for The Chronicle) A beautiful church is a sermon in stone, and its spire a finger pointing to heaven—Schaff. Such an edifice has been our dream for a long period of time. Realizing we could not dream ourselves into success, but must work for it, our pastor launched a building fund drive and be cause of the generous way our many loyal friends, both white and colored, rallied to the cause we cannot, we will not despair. We are encouraged to do as Thomas Knox says: Press on! Press on! Nor doubt nor fear; Fro age to age this voice shall only an economic downturn ot ma jor proportions during the real of the year could prevent 1055 from boosting the U. S. economy to a new peak. This was so because the previ ous peak year was 1963, when full year’s gros% national proc tion—total output of goods services—came to $36,900,000,000. First-quarter production ter of 1953, which was also all-time high for any quar economic activity, was $369,S 000,000 or less than a billion dol lars above the opening qua rate this year. On the basis of this information —but without citing figures—Sec retary of Commerce Weeks told a news conference yesterday there were clear indications that 1956 should be the best business year ever.
