X* Page Two Insurance Men To Organize State Chapter A meeting of all Laurens county MV insurance men has been called for Tuesday night, April 26, for the purpose of organizing a county Of the S. C. Life Under writers association. 'Hie meeting will be held at Clyde Jones’ cafe on Fleming street in Laurens and wtll begin at 8 p. m. W. T. C. Bates, of Columbia, president of the state association, will be present as will Jim Anders, of Greenwood, sectional vice pres ident, who called the meeting. Mr. Anders said that there are THE CLINTON CHRONICLE already 1,500 members in this state. He urged all regular ordi nary life agents or combination weekly premium men to attend the meeting and join the organi zation. At present, he said, 12 Laurens county mm are members of the Greenwood chapter. He said the association is pri marily interested in better train ed agents and better informed public. Schools To Have Fire Safety Poster Contest The Clinton schools are going “all out” to make a complete suc cess of the fire inspection on May 12, sponsored by the Clinton Chamber of Commerce. Robert E. Wysor III, chairman of the Town Fire Inspection Com mittee of the Chamber of Com merce, reported that W. R. Ander son, superintendent of schools has authorized a poster contest on the subject of fire safety. Local judges will be appointed by the CommR- , tee. Cash prizes will be given by the Chamber of Commerce, and the South Eastern Underwriters j Association, Atlanta, Ga. Special teams of inspectors will check the school properties for fire hazards, and conduct fire dr Ufa, while other representatives of the South Carolina Fieldmen’s Asso ciation present programs on fire safety, including the showing of two fire safety films. “Tony Learns About Fire” will be used in the elementary schools. High school students will see “Danger Sleuths,” showing the work of the Underwriters’ Laboratories. Stores, banks, offices, theaters, churches, hotels, and other places of public assembly will be checked for fire hazards by field represen tatives of the capital stock fire in surance companies. As each in spection is completed, the owner or occupant of the building will be given a memorandum of the fire hazards that were noticed and each will be supplied with a book let containing recommendations fos elimination of these hazards. These inspectors give their time to inspect one town each year as a public service. . J. C. Hill, Jr., of Columbia, and F. C. Carlson, of Charleston, rep resenting the South Carolina Fieldmen’s Association, have met with Mr. Wysor and other mem bers of the local Chamber of Com merce, in formulating plans for this inspection. First Aid Course Sponsored Here By Legion Auxiliary As previously announced, there will be an 18 hour course in first aid held at the American Legion hut starting at 7:30 Monday, April 25, and meeting on the following nights, April 27, April 26, May 2, 4, and 6. Two $1,500 Founder’s scholar ships have been added to the schol arship program at IVesbytertan college, President Marshall W. Brown announced yesterday. Hie grants, to be awarded com petitively to two high school sen iors on the basis of intellect, lead ership and character, will pay each student $376 per year for his four years of study si Presbyterian. High school principals have been provided detailed information and application forms on the awards, and the deadline for applying is April 28. All high school senior# are eUgfcle to take the preliminary tests, from which group 12 stu dents will be selected to visit the college campus for interviews and other tests. Final deepens win be made on the basis of this visit. President Brown, in announcing the Founder’s scholarships, said that the college is interested in students who have superior intel lectual ability and earnest scholas tic purpose. He added: “Our institution Is pleased to be able to offer these young high school graduates broader oppor tunities to fulfill, through higher education, the promise they have shown in past endeavors.” Two features of the scholarship program which have proved popu lar in the past and are being con tinued are the Valedictory and Ministerial scholarships.
