Four essen tials or “musts” of vegetable gar den insect and disease control are: Clean seed, clean soil, above ground pest control, and a vigilant watch for pest outbreaks. W. C. Nettles, leader, Clemson Entomol ogy and Plant Disease Extension Work, has prepared the following brief statements on these “musts”. dean seed should be of adapted, disease-resistant varieties. Many diseases are seed-borne. Beans grown in a dry climate carry less bacterial blight and anthracnose than those grown in humid areas. Certified Irish potatoes and sweet potato and tomato plants are def initely to be preferred, as they usually show less disease. Treat ment of seed aids in eliminating some seed-borne diseases, in pro tecting germinating seed from soil-borne fungi which cause de cay, and in getting better stands of healthy plants. Okra, beets, lima beans, and spinach are seed which freQuently respond to seed treat ment. Clean soil is difficult to secure especially in home gardens. Rota tion to break the life cycle of par asitic diseases, insects, and nema todes is effective, but it is usually impractical in home gardens. TOie root-knot nematode is the most serious single garden pest. In three years of intensive gardening moat plots are so severely infested with root-knot that the owner begins to loose interest; however, certain crops that grow during the cooler parts of the year and certain re sistant crops like corn can still be grown successfully. Soil fumiga tion to control nematodes is find ing favor with an increasing num ber of gardeners each season. Li ma beans, tomatoes, okra, and melons are some of the plants which are seriously damaged by the root-knot nematode and which frequently respond well to soil fumigation. Above-ground pest control is ef fective in the control of leaf-eat ing and sucking insects, mildews, and leaf spots. Use of insecticides, such as rotenone and malathion, is essential. Zineb is a good general- purpose fuglcide, but basic copper sulphate is preferred in the con trol of late blight of tomato. A vigilant watch for outbreaks aids in timing application of chem icals and in guiding the gardener in the number and frequency of applications. Also, if diseases like anthracnose of beans or melons show up, the advice not to harv est or disturb plants while they are wet becomes an absolute must! Cutworms are pests which cause untold damage unless the damage is detected early and control mea sures are begun immediately. They’re tired of being considered bird brains behind the wheel by su perior-minded men. For example, one day not too long ago a nicely dressed woman stormed into the national head, quarters of the American Auto mobile Association. “Who around here can teach me to drive?” she demanded with a wild look in her eyes. The receptionist steered her to Archie Connor, head of the Driver Training School. “My husband says I’m too dumb to learn to drive,” she sputtered. “Just wait until show him. He’s out of town in business, and I’ve got to get my license before he comes home.” Easy-going Connor informed the outraged housewife that she should be able to master an auto mobile in two weeks or less. The lady turned out to be an excel lent student and speedily passed the driving course. Nothing was heard from her until just recent ly when she dropped by the AAA. “Boy, oh boy,” she said with a triumphant smile, “You should have seen the expression on my husband's face when I drove to the station to meet his train.” This is one of many cases il lustrating how women are deter mined to explode the myth that females haven’t got what it takes it drive. Actually, America’s estimated 20 million drivers are doing this every day when they take the car out for a spin. The facts show that gals are just as good drivers as men, if not bet ter. Try the following statistics next time some funny man tells you one of those warmed over jokes—like the one about the lady who, when asked what she would do if the brakes didn’t work, repled, “Why I’d steer for something cheap.” A survey made several years ago by the AAA in Cleveland showed that 3.8 pre cent of the men graduates of special high school driving training courses later had accidents, compared to 0.5 per cent of the girls. A study by Dr. A. R. Lauer, di rector of the Iowa State College Driving Laboratory, shows that females between the ages of 16 1 and 33 are less liable to traffic accidents or violations than men in the same group. Dr. Lauer also concluded that the stronger sex becomes too im patient, is less considerate of others while driving and has Worse accidents than women. Women cab drivers paid less for their accidents than the men cabbies, according to research of accident records by psychologists of the University of Pensylvania. It cost the lady taxi drivers an average of $2.68 as against $5.77 for the men. Women, however are not fault less when on the road. There are a few natural disadvantages they must face up to, according to tests given to several thousand men and women by the AAA in 36 cities across the country. They don’t have the strength their opposites do. The average grip for men was 114, for women 68. Bright lights seem to bother them slightly more, the average man required 5.55 seconds to re cover normal vision; the average woman, 7.45. Loud and sudden noises startle them more; under such condit ions, men showed a 2.9 per cent change, while women registered 4.0. Despite these handicaps, fewer women are involved n fatal ac cidents, even taking into account the fact that they comprise an estimated 29 per cent of the 64 million drivers in the U. S. According to the National Saf ety Council, approximately 4,100 women drivers and 41,700 men drivers were involved in fatal accidents in 1953. For a final clincher, listen to Raymond S. Mays, who has been giving driving lessons for 20 years and has been with the AAA in Washington fir 14 years. ‘Td rather teach five women than one man,” says Mays. The women will more likely listen to you and do what you say. But a lot of men think they know it all.” Alcoholism Todov By Mud* C. Collins. Director. The long lost half pint which you acci dentally found touched off the urge, but it was lying in wait all the time. You said that if Susan had not been there you would have taken “just one”, and, of course, that would have been the beginning of a drunk, for as we have said over and over, you are an alcoholic and so never again as long as you live will you be able to take “just one” and stop. We may as well face frankly the problem of the sudden im pulse to take a drink, for it will arise again .and again. Susan will not always be handy to help you over these rough spots, and you will need another source of strength that will always be at hand. For when this impulse strikes, you may one day find yourself standing in a liquor store buying^ a drink without even being able to recall just how you got there. The only power always near, and always able to give you the help needed to refuse to take the first drink is God. He is always as near to you as the air you breathe. By prayer we talk, with God and through prayer we open the way for God to help us. You must never fail to pray the first thing in the morning when you open your eyes. Begin the day with God. Try to face in advance all the trials you may meet, including the sudden im pulse to take a drink. Ask God to help you to do the right thing, no matter what happens. I have talked with more than a hundred alcoholics who had re mained sober for a while, then relapsed into drinking again. Without a single exception arf said that they had failed to pray the day the first drink was tak en. One failure to pray to God the first thing in the morning could lead to taking the first drink. As you well know, it is the first drink that makes the al coholic drunk — for after that first one he cannot stop. Begin the day with God. Live the day with God. End the day with God. The last thing at night give Him thanks for keeping you sober that day. Wipe the slate clean. Confess all your sins of that day. Ask forgive ness. Take stock of the day and forgive everyone who may have wronged you. Never let your eyes close in sleep at night until you have forgiven everyone in the whole world who has wrong ed you . Cast out of your heart all hate, all resentment Get rid of every grudge. Remember, Bill, that God wants to help you just as you want to help your little son. But remember always, God is a gen tleman. He will never force him self on you. It is up to you to make him feel welcome in your life. Sincerely, Maxic Pine Trees Are Endangered By Pine Beetles Farmer: Tho have pine tree* in their woodlanos and others who are uMng pines as shade trees should be on the alert for signs of southern pine beetles and Ips beetles. S. A. Marbut, Clemson ex tension forester, says the dry weather and favorable tempera tures of the past few years have increased the populations of these beetles. He says signs indicating the presence of die southern end Ips beetles are resin or pitch tubes on the middle and upper parts of trunks of pine trees. Pitch tubes on the lower part of the tree from the ground up to six feet on the trunk are usually made by turpen tine beetles and trees attacted bj this beetle often recover. Within 10 days to two weeks after attack by the southern pine and Ips bee tles, the tree will turn a yellowish green and then brown. Whan the needles have turned brown, the beetles have emerged and gone to a new location. The trees attacked by these beetles usually die. In case the attack is fatal, the tree should be cut to as low a stump as possible and removed from the area. However, since trees sometymet recover from at tacks, tree owners are strongly ad vised against cutting trees until they are sure the attack win be fatal.
