Strom Thurmond of South Carolina for promotion from colonel to brigadier general in the Army reserve. When confirmed by his Sen ate colleagues—which appears to be a formality—Thurmond will be one of two general* in the Senate. The other is Sen. Edward Martin of Pennsylvania, a retired major general. Thurmond is a Democrat, Martin a Republican. Thurmond’s reserve unit is the 360th Military Government Area Headquarters unit at Columbia. The unit, which he organized, has a high efficiency rating. Thurmond’s name was on a long list of officers whose names were sent to the Senate for con. firmation. It was the only one singled out by White House press secretary James Hagerty for spe cial mention to newsmen. Hager ty said the promotion had no po- { litical significance, but resulted from Thurmond’s 27 years of service in the Army reserve, in cluding his wartime duty in th* Normandy invasion. Thurmond is national president of the Reserve Officers Assn. He addressed the New York City re serve unit commanders tonight. Presumably, Thurmond will have a chance to vote on his own promotion when his nomination reaches the Senate floor. It will go first to the Armed Services Committee.
