The Clinton Implement Co., Clin ton, S. C. lc Threp Men Held On Several Robbery Charges In Laurens and Clinton are three others held for robberies in Laurens and Clinton. Palmer Hy man, 39, Riley P. Odum, 18, and Millard Campbell, 19, are being held on house breaking and lar ceny charges in connection with the robbery the night of Decem ber 1 of the Western Auto store at Joanna and taking out goods of an unestimated value. Value of goods recovered was estimated at $800. Campbell is reported to have made a confession involving the others after they had been given a lie detector test in Columbia where they had been carried by Deputy Sheriffs Floyd Pitts and Ralph Riddle. Hyman and Odum are charged in another warrant with the robbery of the Johnson Grocery store in Laurens about two w’eoks ago. The three are also charged in Greenville county with the robbery of an auto supply store ni Greenville county. The sheriff said that Odum and Hy man are also being investigated in connection with robberies in York and Spartanburg counties. Warrant are also held for them for the robbery of the post office at Chappells in Newberry county. The sheriff said that also being held on housebreaking and larceny warrants are Bill Posey, 18, and Furman Posey, 25, in connection with break-ins at Gray Hipps’ store and Z. C. Reeves’ store in the Greenwood section on the night of Dec. 6. They are also being investigated in connection with another robbery in Green ville county, he said. County and city forces also re port investigations going on also of three robberies Sunday night. One was at Frank Brooks’ gro cery store on the Greenville high way, Piggs Super Market on North Harper street and Hollis’ liquor store in Laurens. Swartworth Indiana, Pa., Dec. 14—A former auto junk dealer who 26 years ago began turning barren land in to evergreen forests today is the nation’s biggest grower of plan tation Christmas trees. Frederick Musser, a forward- looking busines:man with a flair for selling, expects to ship more than 100,000 first rate trees to re tailers in several dozen states this season. “That’s the only kind we sell,” says Musser, “just the best.” By selling “just the best,” Mus ser has outstripped all other plan tation-type Christmas tree grow ers in the nation, according to the Pennsylvania Tree Growers Assn. Plantation trees are those grown on farms, as contrasted with those that grow wild in the forests. The bespectacled, 50-year-old Musser has 11,000 acres covered with some 25 million trees in vary ing stages of growth. In addition, he maintains three nursery beds covering 270 acres from which he sells aoout 40 mil lion seedlings annually. Musser gets $15 a thousand for seedlings, which adds up to a gross 1954 take of about $600,000. From the sale of Christmas trees—priced at $1.50 each whole sale—he will gross about $150,000 more this year. Musser’s 1954 output of trees is only half of what he shipped last year. He explains that a cutback in planting in 1947-46 is respon sible for the decline. Next year sales again are expected to top the 200,000 mark. Musser was the first big Christ mas tree operator in Indiana coun ty, Pennsylvania, the largest pro ducer of Christmas trees for its: size in the United States. His plantations sprawl mostly over abandoned farm lands. He also makes use of land which had been scarred by strip coal mining, the other major industry of this town of 12,000 some 50 miles northeast of Pittsburg. Musser is intensely interested in conservation and corribines busi ness with reclamation. About hal tjie trees planted don’t come up to Musser’s standards for Christ mas trees and are left standing as timber. Musser Forests, Inc., owned al most wholly by ^Musser and his wife, deals mainly in pines— Scotch, Americaq*> red, Austrian and white. “We feel that we opened up the market for pines in the United States,” Muser says. “Before we started, the pine was practically unheard of as a Christmas tree.” He admits that the long-needled pines are harder to decorate than the short-needled spruces and balsam firs. But he says cut pines will retain their needles for months, whereas spruces and firs begin shedding almost the instant they are cut. The trees Musser sells range generally from 5 to‘7 feet. It takes at least six years — and usually seven—to raise a 7-foot pine from 'a seedling which has been nursed for up to three years. Musser’s primary markets are Pittsburgh, Buffalo, N. Y., Cleve land, Detroit, Chicago and St. Louis. The traditional spruces and I balsams hold sway in the big East ern centers of New York, Phila- ' delphia and Boston. Born in Indiana, Pa., Musser left Temple University after one year to enter business. At the age of 19, he started an auto wrecking concern with* 2,000 given him by his father. For the next seven years, until forced out of business by the de pression, he was moderately suc cessful. It was during this period that Musser saw the possibilities in growing Christmas trees. Young Musser figured he could turn a neat profit by buying up abandoned farms in the area and planting quick-growing pines for Christmas trees. He knew pines thrived in the area. In 1928 Musser planted 400 acres with about 600,000 trees. Shipping on a consignment basis jtwo years later, Musser’s sales to- i taled less than $2,000. By 1938 his trees had gained wide acceptance and he had built a reputation as one of the out standing Christmas tree growers. Ike May Be S. C.
