Carmical New York, Oct. 17.—A tight supply situation is likely to de velop in the cotton market tow- ward the end of the present sea son. With the demand expected to be about 1,000,000 bales more than the yield from the current crop, the surplus from previous crops will have to be drawn up on to mpet the deficit. At the start of this season on Aug. 1, the carry-over amounted to 9,576,00 bales of which a lit tle more than 7,000,000 were held by the Government either direct ly or indirectly. The “free" stock, which represented mini mum working supplies, was roughly 2,560,000 bales, about one-half of which was in the hands of mills. The latest official estimate by the Department of Agriculture placed the prospective yield from this year’s crop at 12,511,000 bales of 500 pounds each, or roughly 12,416,000 running bales. would give a supply for the cur rent season of 14,976,000 running bales. Um Pul at 13.700.000 Balsa If domestic consumption and exports approximate 13,700,000 bales, as forcast by Government sources, the prospective “free” carry-over of cotton at the end of the season on July 1 would be only 1,276,000 bales. This would be less than the amount needed for working stocks. In addition, I this reckoning makes no allow ance for any entries into the 1954 loan. Although Government sources have predicted that domestic consumption of cotton this sea son will approximate 9,200,000 bales, or about 650,000 more than the 8,581,000 last season, reports so far have shown consumption running behind that of a year Conjplala Una. all ika UHto Hams ago. Some increase in buying for the military is anticipated, how ever, and trade circles generally believe that some improvement in domestic consumption will take place soon. , ^ For The Office CHRONICLE PUB.
