Friends of Mrs. Wilmot Shealy will be glad to know she is able to be up again after being ilk the past week. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Shealy of Columbia, have been visiting their son and daughter, in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Spencer are occupying their new home on North Adair St. Extension. Mrs. M. L. Kleckley returned Tuesday from a visit with rela tives in Lexington. Miss Terry Thomas, student at Furman University, Green ville, will spend the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Thomas. Friends of Captain Charles C. Winn will be interested to know he has been transferred from Stetson University in Deland, Fla., to Florida State University, Tallahassee, Fla., wh&e he is at tached to the ROTC. Captain and Mrs. W. L. Beck and daughter, Candy, have re turned to Enid, Oklahoma, after spending some time here with her sister, Mrs. W. G. King, Jr., and other relatives in Florence. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Laurens By-Pass Construction Is Underway , (Says The Laarens Advertiser) Construction of the approxi mately 3V4 mile by-pass around the north side of the city to take care of heavy truck traffic got un der way early this week, tt was reported yesterday by Sam Earle, local engineer of the State high way deportment. Clearing of the right-of-way and light grading was begun in the neighborhood of the shirt factory in preparation for heavier work to follow, he said. Contrac tors on the Job are Spotts & Co., of Newberry. Contractors on the bridge across Little River in the vicinity of North Harper street are C. Y. Thomason Co., of Greenwood. The by-pass line starts from the south on Highway ?6 about two miles from Laurens near the air port, passes through Fleming street in Laurens, crosses North Harper street near Little River, goes thence to Church street, out Church street a short distance and then northerly to an intersection with Highway 76 (Princeton road) about two miles north of Laurens. Mr. Earle said that the present plans are to complete the project from North Harper street to the Princeton road first. The entire job should be completed by early next summer, he said. L. W. Brown, 77, Abbeville Minister Dies The Rev. Lowrie Wilson Brown, Sr., 77, died at the Self Memorial hospital in Green wood Saturday night following a long period of declining' health and a serious illness "of three weeks. Mr. Brown was a native of York county a son of the late Robert Larwson and Marbaret Castle Brown. He was a well known minister of the Southern Presbyterian ifHi u r c h, having served churches in South Caro lina, North Carolina and Florida during his 45 years of active ministry. Since his retirement five years ago he and Mrs. Brown have made their home in Abbeville near the historic Lebanon Pres byterian church where he began his ministry in 1904. Several years ago he moved to Abbeville after giving up the pastorate ot the Paesbyterian church at Jo anna, where he was held in high regard. Mr. Brown was wice married, first to the late Mrs. Annie Mary Evans Brown who died in 1937. His second marriage was to Mrs. Maggie Evans Brown, who survives with the following chil dren of the first marriage: two daughters, Mrs. Henry B. Smith of Monroe, N. C-; and Mrs. Guil ford T. Sims of Tavares, Fla; two sons. Dr. Samuel Evans Brown of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Lowrie W. Brown, Jr., of Or lando, Fla; two sisters, Mrs. Mat- tie B. Williams of Columbia; and Mrs. T. J. Horton of Heatn Springs, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were con ducted from the Abbeville First Presbyterian church Monday af ternoon by the Rev. E. F. Get- tys, the Rev. W. H. Kryder and the Rev. Roy Coker. Interment followed in Evergreen cemetery,: Gainesville, Fla., Tuesday after noon. JHA Conference Held For Chapters For This Area JHA Leadership week • end conference was held September 17-19 at Mountain Rest the JHA camp. There were twelve chap ters represented from Abbeville, McCormick, Laurens, and Green wood counties, making a total of eighty-seven girls. The purpose of the leadership week-end is to train the officers A film was shown Friday night on ‘‘Parliamentary Procedure.” A discussion was held on the film by Miss Annie Mae Cole man, district supervisor of Home Economics. The following girls from Clin ton high school attended: Wiley Davis, Pat Carr, Dolly Crouch, Janet Poole and Linda Poore. Those from Thomwell were: President Mosaic Parsons; Vice- President Linda Hamby, Secre tary Emma G. Austin, Treasurer Carolyn Allen, Reporter Freda Alford. Mrs. lone Wallace had charge of the recreation program.
