At the present time these eight have a total of 24 ac res of Concord and Freedonia grapes in cultivation. E. B. Few, agriculture teach er at Clinton high school, and E. L. Love, production manager of the Piedmont United Grape Growers association, have work ed closely with the men who were interested in establishing vineyards. —— — To get this program started in the county, several meetings were held by Mr. Few last fall to acquaint the farmers of the pros pects of growing grapes. During the winter months the vines were planted and many of them are nqw over four feet high. Few grapes are expected to be har vest this year, but a full crop is seen for next summer. The fanners who have set out vines purchased through the grape growers association are William Gray, Cross Hill, three acres; Wilson Scurry, Cross Hill, four acres; Randolph Davis, Rt. 1, Clinton, two acres; W. P. Dick son, Rt. 3, Clinton, five acres; Pasohal Watts, Moiftvtville, three acres; Roscoe Btmdrick, Mount- •vllle, two acres; G. E. Tumblin, Clinton, three acres; and B. M. Dutton, Clinton, two acres. These farmers are members of the Piedmont United Grape Growers Association, which is an organization patterned after the California Fruit Growers Asso ciation. Mr. Love has been su pervising each vineyard and fur nishing instructions to the grow ers until the vineyards come in to full production. Mr. Gray set his vines out in February of this year and over 50 per cent of them are now over four and one-half feet high, all of this growth coming in the past four months. The rapid growth of these vines is due to the prop er care of the vineyard by the owner. A constant pruning pro cess has helped the growth of these vines more than anything. The one-wire system is being used in these recently establish ed vineyards. This system has two cane limbs per vine. Under the old system two wires are on the trellis and four canes are left vine. Grape growers say the onewire system permits grapes to ripen more uniformly and the grapes are of considerably high er quality, in addition to having less wood growth on the plant. Spartanburg county is some what ahead of Laurens county in vineyards. Spartanburg ex pects to harvest a full crop of grapes this summer. The one- wire system is being used there. The county is also the first one in South Carolina to have com mercial acreage in the state With Laurens and Spartanburg counties blazing the way, the association hopes eventually to develop 13 counties in the Pied mont section of the state. The counties best adapted to grape production were designated by agriculture authorities at Clem- son college. Last year in Spartanburg growers marketed their grapes to wholesale concerns The as sociation is planning to assist in dividual members in marketing their grape crop this year also. It is estimated that one acre of vines will yield an average of four tons of grapes per year. Byrnes Sunday denied that South Carolina has “vow ed” to go along with other south ern states and abolish public schools to avoid the U. S. Su preme Court’s ruling outlawing segregation of the races. Byrnes referred to an Associ ated Press story yesterday from Richmond, Va., on the results of the Southern Governor’s confer ence.
