Dr. Herbert Spaugh - Everyday Counselor The great French religious philosopher and mathematician Pas cal once said that all the trouble in the world was due to the fact that man could not sit still long enough in the quietness of a room. “He must hunt, flirt, chatter, work or even gamble.” , Writing on the same subject Roger Babson quotes George Ber nard Shaw as saymg that “America can survive only by some law which would shut each of us up alone in a room for a day each week with nothing to read or hear so we would be forced to meditate.” Babson says, “Probably the original conception of the Sabbath Day was to bring about something of this character. The truly educated man throughout the ages has found time and a way to do this—to convert competitive activity into si lent pleasure.. Such men could sit alone and medi tate and ‘not perish’/’ Babson poiitffc to a growing opportunity in this country to get “something for nothing,” by turning aside during the week days for quiet meditation In a church. The number of churches which are open ing their doors each day during the week for men . an d women to come in prayer and meditation is iteaaily mcreasmg. We have had wonderful results in our Prayer Little Church on the Lane, which is open day and I* * United every night, and during the winter season it is heated. Many men and women use it. If you live in our neighbor hood you are invited to avail yourself of its use, and kneel before the lovely altar or sit quietly in a pew. Helpful literature is avail able in the lobby. I am frequently asked if I am no* afraid to leave the Chapel open and unattended at night. This Chapel has been open for several year.*, rrd no one has ever disturbed anything there, but many have found help and comfort. There is something about the atmosphere of a church which is conducive to prayer, meditation, relaxation. Many things have built up this atmosphere in a church. Hundreds of sermons have been preached there. Hundreds of prayers have been offered. Young couples have started on the way of marriage there. Children have been baptized, and the last tributes of affection and respect have been paid to those who have gone into the other life. Churches are available for this purpose to all of us today. If your church isn’t open for this purpose, ask your minister to arrange to have it opened. The biasings of religion are by no means limited to one day a week. The best work of The Little Church on the Lane is done between Sundays. If I were compelled to choose between keeping the church open on Sundays, or betwen Sundays, I would choose the period between Sundays. Let’s learn to use our churches every day in the week and not limit them to Sundays only. In the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. (Hebrews 2:12) Read Philipplans 1:1-7. t Some years ago, we took a party of young people up Snowdown, the highest mountain in Wales. We chose a dangerous track, and the last half mile proved especially difficult. By holding on to one another and helping one another, we surmounted every obstacle and reached the summit. Just before we arrived at the top, we noticed an elderly man coming up our track alone. He was doing alone what it would have been impossible for any member of our party to have done without help. On the summit we talked with this stranger. He turned otit to be an expert climber, who had spent most of his life climbing mountains. In contrast to him, we were just ordinary people, but together we had managed to reach the top of the mountain.' The Christian Church enables ordinary men and women to live the Christian life successfully. In the fellowship of the Christian Church, for its worship that uplifts us, its teachings that train us, its fellowship that fortifies us. Help us this day to recognize our need of the Church In Christ's name. Amen. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY ‘They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.” Ronald G.
