In this Jackson and Henry Clay fought it QtP- Clay forced a bill through Con- i gress in 1832 for the renewal of the charter—1836, but Jackson 1 vetoed it. "In 1834 business men of Charleston read the signs of the times and knew that The Bank of the United States was doom ed. They were men of great vis ion, together with extraordinary practical ability. Not waiting for the axe to fall, for the charter , of The Bank of United States ; would not expire until 1836. 1 those men prepared to assure full, uninterrupted banking fa cilities for South Carolina plant ers and other business men. This State found a market for ' its cotton in Europe and it was j necessary to have all the facil ities of exchange and credit if the products of South Carolina should move steadily from pro ducer here to the manufacturer in Europe and England. They ap plied to the General Assembly for a charter, which was grant ed by special A' t of December 17, 1834. According to custom, the Gen eral Assembly chose men to so licit subscriptions to the stock in Charleston, Cheraw. Columbia, Camden and Hamburg. Please take note: Do you know anything nbout Hamburg, South Carolina? Business men of these commun ities were invited to subscribe to the authorized Capitol Stock of J $2,000,000 They did so; they 1 subscribed overwhelmingly. How much do you suppose? $89,449,- 000!- Think of that! They were invited to subscribe $2,000,000; they subscribed $39,449,000! That was The Bank of Charles ton, mother of the nineteea other members of a great family of banks. Are you interested in fine old buildings? Well, there is a bank building in the City of Charles ton, at the corner of Broad and State Streets. On its front is an emblem, a large Golden Ameri can Eagle. Once the Bank of the United States occupied that building. That Bank called its Charleston branch the Office of Discount and Deposit. It is said that a Massachusetts Bank a few years ago offered to buy the* fix tures at a fancy figure, but their eagerness to buy caused the man agement of the South Carolina National Bank to keep every thing as it was. When the Office of Discount and Deposit liquidated and went out of business the Bank of Charleston bought the building and the fixtures and it’ is still a bank, the South Carolina Na tional Bank, now a great bank- mg and trust institution of twen- ty banks, operating in sixteen cities of South Carolina.
