k t Page Eight THE CLINTON CHRONICLE Thursday, November 26, 1953 Observance To Open Thanksgiving New York, Nov. 20—Bible pas sages for each day between Thanks giving and Christinas were listed today for the annual 30,-day ob servance of “worldwide Bible 'read ing.:’ At the same time, President Eis enhower sent word that “I heartily endorse” the plan for “encouraging study of the Bible” during the pe riod between the two holidays. It is, he said, “a most fitting time for this needful custom to be em phasized.” Eisenhower is chairman of the sponsoring committee for the American Bible Society. The com mittee also includes former Presi-! dents Herbert Hoover and Harry Truman. The society said that during the period, millions of people here and abroad will turn to life same verses cf the scriptures on the same day —for reading and meditation. The readings, selected through a poll of ministers, begin on Thanks- g.ving Day, with Psalm 103. Which says in part: “As for man, his days are like grass: he flourishes like a flower cf the field: for the wind passes ever ;t, and it is gone and its place knows no more: But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting . . .” The idea for Worldwide Bible Leading was born on Guadalcanal ! when a lonely young Marine wrote to ask his parents to join him in reading the same passage from the | Bible each day, so that he and his parents could be together spiritual ly. The idea was passed on to the! society and the program became worldwide under its auspices and those of related Bible societies throughout the world.
