Southern Bell Man Explains Network , TV To High School How television programs and telephone calls speed through space by Bell System radio relay routes was demonstrated to the students of Clinton high school Tuesday by A. T. Stephens of Columbia, South ern Bell’s publicity manager for South Cafolina. , Miniature radio relay apparatus representing equipment used to connect various cities in the South east with the coast-to-coast chain of towers was used by Mr. Stephens to explain the principles of this re cent development in the field of communications. The speaker ex plained how up to 3600 telephone calls, or television programs could be 1 transmitted simultaneously w*i^tiout the use of wires by means of high frequency radio beams call ed micro-waves. This new skyway communica tions route permits static free trans mission from towers which are sit uated about 25 miles apart and range up to 500 feet in height. Laboratory equipment was used to show how high frequency radio waves behave. Similarities between radio waves and light waves were likewise demonstrated. The students heard how another method coaxialr cable, is also used for transmitting network televis- \ ion programs from city to city. Mr. Stephens spoke briefly of' other recent developments and im provements in the field of teleph ony. The informative program was ar ranged for by R. P. Wilder, princi pal of the school, through C. W. Un derwood, Southern Bell’s manager for the Clinton area. John Furman Daniel, M. D., F. A. C.
