To strengthen and preserve i the private colleges as centers for independent thinking under Chris-: tian influence. To help accomplish these goals, the foundation will seek funds from private donors and from bus iness and industry, Grier said. This united fund-raising activity, how’- ever, will not interfere with fund ing programs in progress in the in dividual colleges. Gifts may be made to the foundation for presen tation to a designated college, if de sired. One of the foundation’s principal purposes will be that of meeting the challenge of changing condi tions in South Carolina, Grier em phasized. “A mere glance at the economic picture in our state reveals that enormous changes are takirlg place and will continue to occur for many years to come,” he said. “We are on the w'ay toward becoming one of the great industrial states where as a few years ago we w r ere entirely an agricultural society. “The income of our people is in creasing by leaps and bounds. This has altered Uje very face of our state and changed the manner of living of its people. “Obviously, the role of the pri vate colleges must be enhanced, and their service to the people in creased.” Grier said few people realize what he called, the vital role of the private college in strengthening and preserving the American dem ocratic way with" its “bedrock sys tem of free enterprise.” “The small private and denomi- national colleges enjoy the benefit of small classes, personal supervi sion, freedom of expression, free dom from politics, and a wholesome Christian spiritual atmosphere,” he declared. “With these advantages, the in dependent college is a bulwark of American philosophy.” To further the foundation’s pro gram, a board of trustees composed of representatives of business and industry, as well as of higher edu cation, will be established, Grier said. In addition to Grier, other foun dation officers are Dr. James C. Kinard, president of Newberry col lege, vice chairman; Dr. John Ply ler, president of Furman Univer sity, secretary; and Dr. Pendleton Gaines, president of Wofford col lege, treasurer. 11 1 —Taka a look In iko raio* RAGES •f your ToUphoiio Directory iottiid uNOft authority or coca cola company iv GREENWOOD COCA-COLA BOTTLING U Ml'.NY k a r*giit«r»d trade-mark. 19JJ.
