To il- j ~ "" lustrate how much of a factor this Tiiffi RS||jnn change is, the value of our dollar WfCI I IfU DIMIUII was 100 cents in 1939; it declined to 52 cents in 1952 and then started climbing back again. Considering that the people of the United States hold life insurance policies total ling over $275 billions, this decline in the value of our dollar has cost Americans many billions of dollars. Reasons For Declining Dollar There are various reasons why -the dollar declined in value during the past twenty years. The pri mary one was that owing to war and preparation for war we did not balance our national budget but issued billions of paper money to make up the deficit. Any banker will accept your note at par if you have all your bills paid, a good job, and money in the bank. If, how ever, you can’t pay your bills and are constantly giving out more notes, then these notes are accepted only at a discount, and the more notes you issue, the bigger the dis- # count you must give in order to* have them accepted. Another reason for a declining dollar is when anyone accepts wages, interest, of profits for more than he deserves. Wageworkers are entitled to wage increases in proportion to their increased pro duction, less fair rental for the new machinery. When, however, labor unions force employers to give them more wages without giving more production in return, this re sults in an unbalanced national budget. In the long run, none of us can get “something for noth ing.” What labor gets in unpro ductive wages, it loses through higher prices, higher rents, and a declining dollar value. Why The Dollar Is Declining In view of the fairer attitude which the Eisenhower Administra tion is taking to balance the spend ing, borrowing ,and production bud gets, the value of the dollar should now go up again. This means many things: (1) The money which «»i South will come into her own when her fields are green in the winter.” Horticulture 1. Purpose ment llkewise , H * Earned By State Residents In r 52 Charleston, Aug. 17—A record $2,341,000,000 went into the pockets and bank accounts of South Caro lina residents last year in income payments to individuals, an aver age of $1,099 for every man, woman and child in the state, C. W. Mar tin, district manager of the U. S. Department of Commerce, has an nounced. This was $213,000,000 more than was paid in 1951. The average in come payment to individuals in 1951 was $1,003. The income includes that receiv ed in wages and salaries, net in come of proprietors including rents and other items such as so cial insurance benefits, relief, vet erans’ pensions and benefits, and allotment payments to dependents of military personnel. - The increase in total payments in South Carolina from 1951 to 1952 approximated 10 per cent. This was double the percentage rise for the nation as a whole. Construction payrolls in South Carolina, which increased more than one and one-half times from 1951 to 1952, led all southeastern states in gains. This expansion un derlays the state’s 10 per cent ad vance in total income, the fourth largest in the nation.
