BABSON Babson Park, Mass., April 16.— Last December on my way from Massachussets to Florida I found almost all of my Wall Street friends were bullish on stocks. Wall Street Confused Today, owing to the Korean peace outlook, the sentiment is now bearish. In fact, the bulls are con fined to those who still believe War III is more likely than when Stalin lived. They hold “War Babies” which they fear would suffer by mrt\ ww f ■. "t- j B*rer W. Babiok peace. Impartial obser vers are very con fused and uncer tain as to the fu ture. They are thankful that Eis enhower is presi dent; and are glad for Stalin’s death. • Wall Street, how ever, believes that Malenkov is not Stalin’s real successor and that ■' we will see a change to someone else. They further feel some one of the satellites may kick over the traces and that China may be the one. All Agree On Interest Rates The only thing Wall Street now agrees upon is that money rates will stiffen. This will be due to the increase in the Government Bond rates and in installment buy ing, or the over-building of homes and other causes. Here is good news for small investors! You ‘ will soon be able to buy 3 1-4 per cent U. S. Government Bonds. This is the first time for 20 years that you have been able to do this. Loaners of money are also getting “choosey” about their loans;—They are turning down j many applica tions w’hich they would have ac- cepted a year ago. Banks are waiting to see what the future will bring forth. This hesitancy au tomatically increases interest rates. The interest yield of bonds is al so an important factor. When good bonds yield little, banks and trustees loan money more freely on mortgages; but today the yield of good bonds is increasing. Many of these bonds are non-taxable as to Federal Income, due to the vast amounts being issued for construct- , ing superhighways. Interest Payments Already High Although a bank will tell you that its rate has not increased, yet to you it has increased in terms of purchasing power. A manufac turer who now pays 3 1-2 per cent interest to buy machinery which runs only 40 hours a week is really paying more now than he was pay ing when the rate was 4 per cent and his machinery operated 48 hours per week. You are already i paying more for mortgage money | now than when building costs were much less than present costs 1 because you must borrow more i money now to build a home. Those , who now buy cars and merchandise on installments are today paying 8 per cent or more. Any attempt to raise wage rates faster than the increase in hourly productivity is equivalent to an in crease in interest rates. The most practical solution to present high prices is to abolish the 40 hour week. Otherwise, we must curtail spending which would result in un employment. To refer again to in terest rates, these must increase to check a return of inflation. _“We cannot have our pie and eat it too!” What About Coffee Prices? This brings me to say another word about retail prices. Since the controls have been lifted, hundreds of complaining letters have come * to me. Most of these refer to the price of coffee. Let me say that the price controls were taken off of coffee to help our “good neigh bor policy” in Central and South America. Therefore, when you pay Revival Services To Open Sunday At Fairview Church The Rev. C. O. Lamoreux, pastor of the First Baptist church of New berry, will lead revival services op ening at Fairview Baptist church Sunday at 3:30 p. m. with the even ing services daily Sunday through Friday. Morning services will be at 10 o’clock Tuesday through Friday. Special music will be provided with a cordial invitation extended to the public to attend all of the services. The pastor, Rev. T. B. Altman has announced cottage prayer meetings for today (Thursday) at 7:30 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Morris John son and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Honeycutt. All members of the church are invited to unite in the central meeting Saturday at 7:3§ p. m. in preparation for tha an nounced revival services. more for coffee, just' remember you are truly helping millions of very poor people working on the coffee plantations. If you don’t want to help these poor South Americans by paying more for your coffee you can re duce the cost of coffee by drinking less if it. We don’t need to buy so much coffee. Just reduce one cup a day and you will more than off set the recent increase in price; while your health will be better and you will live longer. Coffee is not a food; it is only a tempor ary stimulant at best. The pres ent growing habit of many office employees to demand a cup of cof fee in the middle of the morning not only increases the price of cof fee for everyone, but, by reducing efficiency, is helping to bring on a to handle them business depression. New License System (From The Carolina Sportsman) "The new license handling plan of the Wildlife Resources Depart ment will not only save consider able money but will allow wardens more time for their regular duties. A number of agents handling licenses have expressed opposition to the plan but it is not believed there will be any difficulty in se curing a sufficient number of agents. Under the new plan any mer chant can handle licenses, provid ed he is bonded up to the amount of licenses he handles or is willing to pa'y cash in advance and be re imbursed for the licenses he does not sell. The agents will deal di rectly with the license division in Columbia and the wardens will this up, the 10 cents he receives for selling a license is not the reas on he handles them—he’s interest ed in getting sportsmen into his store. The provision that an agent may pay cash for his licenses and be reimbursed is expected to ap peal to the agent who handles only a few licenses. The adoption of this plan will always the danger of personali- was up to the warden there was ties coming into the picture, with a warden perhaps refusing to give licenses to a person who should have them. On the other hand, some wardens would allow anyone to handle licenses swamping them selves with work. At on time some counties had over 100 agents, undoubtedly reduce the number at i although this number was reduced the last minute. However, in some states the only place in which a license can be purchased is in the county court house. Under the plan that has been in §ffect for years, the wardens, who are bonded, distribute the licenses to selected agents in their coun ties and are personally responsible for collections. There are several weaknesses in this system. The new plan will not only alow the wardens more time for regular duties but wil save consid erable expense money. Since the selection of the agents last year on instructions from Di rector A. A. The plan goes into effect July 1 but will not affect fishing li censes this year, since these li censes are sold on a calendar year and have already been distributed. Hunting licenses are sold on a fis cal year basis and the new license year starts for them July 1. Local Boy Back " From World Cruise W. He returned from Korean combat duty and a ’round the world cruise on one of eight ships of Destroyer Squadron 20, lending a seven month trip.
