Above the deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight. delphia in 1865, Philip Brooks went abroad for a year of travel and to make a pilgrimage to Palestine. The day before Christmas he rode on horseback from Jerusalem to Bethlehem and visited not only the usual sights in the village but went east ward down the traditional Field of Shepherds. He was very much moved to be on such hallow ed gounds. Returning to America and some two years after (at the age of 32) he wrote his immortal carol, which was used at once in the Christmas service of his Sun day school in Philadelphia. The hymn tune. “St. Louis,” was written by Lewis Redner (1-831- 1908) organist of the church which t sp perfectly suits the words. Home Safety Rules Check your home for anything that might cause an accident. Keep your Christmas tree in wat er and away from flames. Use electric tree and window lights—no candles. Check your electrical connec tions for shorts and worn-out wires. Rules For Christmas Traffic Use extra care for the extra holi day hazards. ' Let the Christmas spirit show itself in your attitude toward oth er drivers—and pedestrians. Don’t let those Christmas pack ages you are carrying obstruct your vision. Don’t drive if you drink, and vice versa. Start in time and take it easy. Allow for the winter weather and the extra holiday traffic. who are growing old; to stop ask ing how much your friends love you, and ask yourself whether you love them enough; to bear in mind the’ thing that other people have to bear in their hearts; to try to un dersand what those who live in the same house with you really want; without waiting for them to tell you; to make a grave for your ugly thoughts and a garden for your kindly feelings, with the gate open —are you willing to do these things for even a day? Outdoor Christmas Scene Attracts Many The living outdoor Christmas scene was shown on the lawn o< the First Presbyterian church on Sun day, Monday and Tuesday night from 7 until 9 o’clock. A number of members of the church took parts as characters in the impressive pre sentation. The scene during the three evenings was witnessed by large crowds from the city, com munity and elsewhere.
