Long and Mrs. Ferrell Long attended a party honoring Mrs. Richard Bishop in Greenville Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Louie Prater spent Sunday guests two students from the Columbia Lutheran seminary, Jack Martin of Roanoke, Va., and Homer Frye of Hickory, N. C. Mrs. E. J. Willingham and Mrs. Carson Nabors were Tuesday visi tors in Greenville. Mike Cooley will celebrate his birthday on December 18. Also on December 18th those having - birthdays are Mrs. John Gaskin and Mrs. Joe Delaney. Mrs. Gene Craven, Mrs. Calvin Elliott and Mrs. A. S. Holt visited birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Bowers had as tient at the Medical Center in Whitmire, on Sunday. Birth Announcamani Abrams Cpl. and Mrs. Wallace Abrams of Newberry, announce the birth of a son, Wallace Danny, at Newberry county hospital on Nov. 20. Mrs. Abrams is the former Miss Kitty McConnell of Newberry. Youth For Christ Rally The Youth For Christ Rally will be held at the Joanna Church of God Sunday at 2:30, with the church as host to the churches in the district. There will be special music and group singing. Rev. Robert N. Taylor, pastor, also announces that the Christmas play will be presented at the church on December 21 at 7:00. Christmas Decorations The committee in the Woman’s club on the home Christmas deco rations with Mrs. J. M. Bozard as chairman, makes the following an nouncement: Cash prizes will be given. First prize, by Joanna Cotton Mills, for the prettiest; 2nd prize by Joanna Foundation, for the most original; 3rd prize, by the Woman’s club, for the most simple. The deadline for decorating is sundown, December 22. The judges will be from out of town. Christmas Party At County Home On December 19 the Woman’s club will have a party at the Lau rens county home for the inmates. Each person will receive a gift and there will be a Christmas tree with all the trimmings. Misses Ruth Hair and Mildred Bozard will present an inspirational program. Mrs. Arthur League is chairman of the project and any club member desiring to_ may contact her or the club president, Mrs. Pat Bow ers, and transportation will be ar ranged. Hie tables were artistically decorated in keeping with the Christmas season. To Honor Faculiy Sunday afternoon, Dec. 14, Mr. and Mrs. G. N. SHIRLENE GOSNELL HANNAH Christmas Party Members of tht Methodist Ever- Ready class and WSCS will have their annual joint Christmas party Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the church. Those desiring to share in the party and havt not drawn a name, are invited to come and bring a gift for the tree. Birthday Party Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Stroud en tertained their daughter, Toni, with a party Friday evening hon- oing her 13th birthday. This was the honoree’s first party and 60 friends gathered at Joanna club to wish her much future happiness. Games and music, led by Mrs. Lavinia Cooley, were enjoyed throughout the evening. The party .table was overlaid with a white linen cover and centered with the decorated birthday cake in green and white frosting and burning candles. Encircling the cake was a miniature Santa in the sleigh and 8 reindeer and on either side of the centerpiece were tall red tapers in Christmas holders. Small decorated Christmas trees were used at vantage points along the long table. Refreshments of ice cream, green and red frosted cakes, assorted candies and drinks were served. Assisting Mrs. Stroud in serving were Mrs. Cecil Bishop and Mrs. Curtis Salters. Toni received many gifts which were opened and passed. The out of town guest was Miss GaM Templeton of Calhoun Falls. Enjoys Birthday On Sunday Mrs. Jeff O’Dell hon ored Mr. O’Dell with a dinner at thier home on Magnolia street. On Dec. 5th Mrs. Bessie Jennings of Clinton, was admitted to the local hospital. H. L. Lever of Clinton, was ad mitted on Dec. 9th to the local hos pital. Little Gloria Jean Petty, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. M. P. Petty, was a patient at the local hospital several days last week. J. Earl Belue was a patient last week at Joanna hospital. Aljand 50th Anniversary Celebration Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Weaver and son, Don, attended the 40th wed-i ding anniversary celebration of the! latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. I Surrttt, of Union, last Thursday; night. In the receiving line were; Mr. and Mrs. Surrett and children, i Mrs. Surrett wore her original wedding gown and was presented; with a diamond solitaire from her husband honoring the occasion. C, Penney company, nation wide department store organization, has announced that its directors have authorized a special year-end pay ment for morikjhan 50,000 associates in the company's 1,629 stores, offices and warehouses throughout the Un ited States. The payment will Pe an amount equal to two weeks’ pay for all full time associates who have been em ployed for the full year 1952, and proportionate amounts for extra and part-time associates and those em ployed less than a year. All Penney associates will share in! the payment except management! .staff members whose earnings are] determined largely by the company’s j long-standing profit-sharing plan. It! will be made December 15 at each associate’s December 15 rate of pay. In a letter to the firm’s associates, j A. W. Hughes, president, said the payment was based upon the com pany’s results for 1952. “We are par ticularly happy to be able to make this payment as a result of what has been accomplished in our 50th anni versary year”, he said. “The possi bility of future payments of course will continue to depend upon year to year results.” The payment is in addition to the regular company provisions for as sociates’ benefits,* including Sick | beneft, Gratiitous Death and Dis- [ memberment benefit. Thrift and; Profit-Sharing Retirement plans, j discounts on company purchases and others. It is the sixth to be made since the end of World War II.
