This bonus for 1951 was more than two hundred thou sand dollars. Since Mr. Regnery has owned the mill more than two mil lion dollars has been paid in bonuses. The people there are happy and fortunate. , Since the death of Mr. Moorhead, always a. great friend of.rtvine and 1 Mr. James C. Self did me the hon- a i ova ble man, Mr. Walter G. America cannot buy good will, nor { cap she permanently prevent the other nations from becoming Com-1 munistic by our continuing to pour j out money like water. If other coun tries wish to try Communism we are not rich enough to “buy them off’’; nor are they worth redemeing with th^ heavy tax-money paid by Amer ican citizens. I quote some recent figures as giv en out by the Government itself: "U. S, foreign aid in the year end ed last' June 30 amounted to $5 bil lion, bringing total economic and military assistance since mid 1945 to $38.1 billion, the Commerce De partment reported. Counting only the two years since the invasion of Korea in mid 1950, the Government has poured out $9.8 billion to help build up the free world against the threat of Soviet ^icious apple pie, as well as the gen era! excellence of the lunch. But the apple pie was notable and I say it with emphasis. Mr. Regnery, a very studious and ’.houghtful man, is not only stimu lating company but has always shown me that courtly and gracious consideration that characterizes a gentleman of the old school, as we Southerners say. 1 Mr. James C. Self, a native of Edgefield County, South Carolina, is South Carolina’s greatest son. And all the splendid achievements of Mr. Self’s career are^ within twenty-one miles of his birth place in the hills of old Edgefield County. Mr. Regnery and Mr. Self are great builders; they build of human material as well as with bricks and mortar. Both came from the farm; both are self-made men, but they have done wonders lor others. Mr. Regnery, the lad from Iowa, who had vision, industry, thrift, took his I aggression: . — place in the foremost ranks by his j The Commerce Department sum- own worth gpd achievement.. marized foreign aid in the October ^issue 3HH ‘Survey of Tli'rrenf B,: - him, but he used that great quality j iness.” During fiscal 1952, it said, as Thomas Carlyle suggested—as the there was a sharp increase in foreign 1XFINITE CAPACITY FOR TAK- military aid over fiscal 1951.
