The place was the desolate region not far from Jerusalem, per haps west of the Dead Sea. Jesus had gone into that region to be alone and to think through the ministry that lay ahead of Him So absorbed was he in his thoughts that he took no food, but, after 40 days and 40 nights he was ahun- gered. So the devil, coming to tempt him, attacked him on the side of the senses. He tempted Jesus to turn the stones at his feet into bread. But Jesus vanquished the tempter with the word of God. Then the devil tried to persuade Jesus to make a spectacular dis play to attract immediate attention to His ministry. Again the Lord turned to the word of God and quite vanquished the devil in the second assault. In the third temptation, the devil tempted Jesus to compromise with evil for he conquest of the world and all its kingdoms and ..their glory. But Jesus said: ‘Get thee behind me, Sptan,’’ and he quoted again from the word of God. Then the devil left him.
