Tax Collections
In State Go Up,
Surplus Expected
Columbia, June 2. — Increased
tax collections made it appear cer
tain today that the state of South
Carolina will end its fiscal year
June 30 with an operating surplus.
State Auditor J. M. Smith said
he felt sure there will be a gen
eral fund surplus. He added, how
ever, that it is too early yet to
hazard a guess as to its size.
Smith pointed out that there has
been a substantial increase in state
income tax collections this year.
It is largely on this factor that
hopes of a surplus are based. .
A State Tax Commission report
showed that collections from all
sources from last July through May
totaled $124,157,337 compared with
$85,205,885 in the corresponding
period of the previous year.
The sales tax, which did not go
into effect until July 1, account
ed for $39,985,548 of the total. De
ducting this amount would still
leave collections running almost $5
million ahead of last year.
To date, the income* tax has
brought $26,272,012 into the treas
ury. This is $3,670,201 more than
was collected from the tax at this
time a year ago.

Grond Opening
Joe's Servicenter
For Three Days
In today’s paper Joe C. and Chas
■Re McDaniel announce the formal!
opening of the recently enlarged
and modernized Joe’s Esso Service
Station—on—East Carolina avenutr
The opening begins today and will
continue through Friday and Sat
urday, the announcement states.
The history of this station has
been one of constant growth until
today it is one of the most mod
ern and up-to-date in the city.
Among the chief attractions for
the traveling public are the beau
tiful tile rest rooms being installed
in all modern Esso stations.
Joe’s station is also the city's bus
headquarters with 28 schedules a
day, some of which go to such dis
tant points as New York, Tampa |
and San Antonio, with no change
of bus enroute.
The popular place also has a'
modern soda fountain serving
drinks, ice cream, sandwiches, cof-1
lee. etc. With young ladies in!
charge the department is open
daily from 7 a. m. until 10 p. m.
But the chief business, the Mc
Daniel boys state, is the sale of
Esso products, Atlas tires and bat f
teries. Since the addition of ne.v
pumps and another island more
customers can be served dt one
time. Improvements have also been
made in the lubrication and wash
departments. A large plate glass
window adds to the attractiveness
as well as helps the operator to
keep the pumps in sight while in- 1
side the building. Charles Bible,
once a member of the Thornwell j
orphanage family, is Joe's first as
sistant. t ;
Joe and Charles express iaeir
appreciation to the people of .Un
ion and the surrounding commun-1
ities for the success they have cn- j
joyed. All old customers, as well'
as new, are cordially invited to:
share in the formal opening during (
which nine prizes will be given!

Dream Comes True,’’ will be found j
in a page announcement else- \
