Inform the People Unofficial reports state that the -most drastic changes will be recom mended in the school survey being made of the county and not yet re- Itt-sed to the public. It will call for the abolition of many schools, the centralization of power in the hands of a few, which means that the schools are almost entirely to be re moved from common touch with the people. Some consolidations irr e needed, of course, but the wisdom is questionable of abolishing schools in m any splendid communities and moving most of the children by ex pensive transportation into the larg er cities, Clinton and Laurens, and < specially the latter, where reports | hear much anti-Truman talk without say the construction of an enormous action, from prominent leaders of Truman program and policies in or der to curry favor with him. That means that the president will have a big hand, even though from a smoke- filled room off the convention floor— in drafting a compulsory FEPC plat form as well as picking the candidate to carry the socialistic banner. « Northern Democrats and machines j.j linked up with Truman are now con- »‘j vinced they say that Governor Stev-jfc enson (Truman’s choice) can not only be drafted, but will be, and that he can win with the backing of the present administration either over j as Eisenhower or Taft. This man Stev-I:’; enson says that the Democratic party ^ “cannot retreat” from the civil rights program it wrote into its 1948 platform. The people have a right to know ■what is proposed, and to express themselves on a far-reaching arbi trary action that probably will have bad as well as good points. Taxpay ers were told that the sales tax would result in a reduction of taxes. To the contrary, the budget as filed in the auditor’s office recently and pub lished in the two county papers, shows an increase rather than de crease in the tax load.
