He really becomes I a gangster-type for the time being' "Sunk low in a closed car, a j driver does not look much like an - ordinary man on the street. He is i more like a machine—a machine with human traits, but mainly a. .monster. Furthermore, he sees,,sim ilar machine-men rather than or-i dinary people on the roads wuth, j him, anr he has the same imper- [sonal feeling toward them that he has toward all machines. Under these circumstances, he becomes more primitive when he drives. ^ He is easily excited to subhuman i emotions. Besides that, he is in aj situation where he receives fewer i \ impulses from the outside that • would tend to cause him to act courteously and humanely. Added Sense of Power “Being somewhat hard to identi fy. the man in the car has, per haps supcbnsciously, some of the same sense of security that the es sentially cowardly Ku Kluxer has in his mask and bedsheet. With this sense of security, both become victims of a latent, selfish urge which they could not keep under | control, if it were clear that they would have to face the consequenc es of their actions surely and promptly. Both also feel an added sense of power—the driver in the speed of his car and the Ku Kluxer in the number of mobsters around him. “As a matter of fact, we drive on the whole pretty much as we walk. Just take a look at a crowded side walk downtown or a bargain sale. There may be a few more perfunc tory "scuse me’s’ on the sidewalk, because they can be heard there and not in the car, and also they may save some black eyes—but surely there is little more regard for traffic customs on the side walk, and very little more cour tesy shown there than in the lanes used by cars.
