Your county agent and seedsman can give particulars, and instruc tions come on the packages. _ Resistant Melons Watermelon-planting time ap proaches. In late years the old va rieties have been fast going from the scene. They are being replaced by new disease-resistant sorts that the breeders have brought forth. Much of this melon improvement work has been done at the USDA Vegetable Breeding Laboratory near Charleston. The county agents in .the commercial melon areas co operate with the laboratory in try mg out the new sorts in acreages sufficient far carlot shipments on disease-infested lands. The t\\o worst <Jiseases- of watermelons, ah- thracnose and wilt, have been ra?g~eIy~Yohquered by breeding re sistant sorts of melons. The local county agents in the melon areas can advise you about varieties and sources of reliable seed. .. It- only about 100 days from the time you plant a seed until the melons are ripe. Hot dog! They are worthy of every farmer's support. , Spraying for Weeds When I was in the county agent’s office in Anderson in mid-ebruary there was evidence of much activ-* ity on grain spraying for weeds over the county. Most of the trou blesome mustard and thistle of the past has been elibiinated from the fields. Now ye-tch is their main I weed in grain. And the spraying j kills that just as it did the thistle and mustard. Vetch is* a good thing in its place. But its volunteering makes it a rather troublesome weed in grain fields.
