The matter of taxes may not be a worry to Barnwell county, as people say that Barnwell has no taxes, though even Barnwell must have some of the pleasure of paying taxes; but here is something of interest about all the land of the Federal bu reaucratic empire: In Arizona the Federal Government should pay $2,- 464,346, but actually pays $1,007,500. Who pays the difference? In Cali fornia the Government should pay $34,979,103, but really pays $7,750,- 525. As Editor Thomas R. Waring says: “The New Dealers and the Fair Dealers say they are opposed to Socialism and Communism. That number of acres is a little more than half the number of acres in the smallest of South Carolina’s counties.} Supporters of other projects, Mis souri Valley and St. Lawrence Sea ways among them, were of the maj ority. Southern ‘Democrats’, so it is reported, voted for the ‘project’ with an understanding that President 1 Truman’s FEPC measure would not be passed.
